Cheney is heckled at his alma mater

by Mead Gruver - Sept. 11, 2009 12:00 AM
Associated Press

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Praise and protest greeted former Vice President Dick Cheney as he visited his alma mater Thursday for the dedication of a new international center bearing his name.

About 100 protesters heckled Cheney throughout the dedication ceremony for the University of Wyoming's Cheney International Center. Cheney and his wife, Lynne, donated $3.2 million for the new center for foreign students and for scholarships for Wyoming students to study abroad.

Protesters made up about a fifth of the crowd of about 500 and hoisted critical signs: "Shame on UW" and "We don't want your blood money."

"They violated international law. They had no respect for other countries," Jennie Boshell, a senior at the university, said of the Bush administration. "To put Cheney's name on an international center is ridiculous, and it makes the university look stupid."

1. i agree with the student protesters.
using a state university campus to launder his reputation (through the donation of ill-gotten wealth)should not be acceptable to the university administration or the wider community.
cheney never supported public education, so it seems the bequeath of $3.2 million to his alma-mater is an attempt to make it appear as if he did.
if he values the education he received there he would not have spent his career undermining the operation of state sponsored schools (i hope it was not the university of wyoming that provided cheney with his ethical and moral framework).
i suppose his name will remain on the building since he donated so much for its construction but how will the school feel if cheney ends his life behind bars as a convicted war criminal?
i don't expect that to happen, but it could.

17. you are right that $3.2 million isn't much.
if i was on the board i would have advocated paying cheney that same that same amount to never mention he had had any connection to the place.

56. The Vice President of the No Child Left Behind signer gets a dedication at PUBLIC university?
HYPOCRISY. I cannot understand why Cheney's alma mater is dedicating a part of its campus to the vice president who wasted billions in Iraq and supported the commander in chief in legislation that screwed over our public schools.

And about the protest, dunno if it was planned way before Rep. Joe Wilson heckled Pres. Obama on Wednesday.

Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 06:54 PM by Hulk
Ever drive through Wyoming? RED NECK SOIL. I'm 100 happier to meet a liberal/progressive from WY than most other states cause they only have a couple hundred humans living there, and if ONE is a lib, it greatly increases the percentages.

Good for the protesters. I would be so ashamed if it was my state/alma mater.

13. Wyoming's an unusual place.
I'll give you that there are a lot of rednecks, but a significant minority of the population is made up of old hippies/kids of old hippies communing with nature that type of stuff. So while there are a lot far-rights kooks, you also come across some of us on the far left.

28. To me, wyoming rednecks aren't as vile as southern ones.
Polls show that most of them are pretty much libertarian with a live and let live attitude. In fact, I believe a poll showed that wyoming, alaska, and idaho were among the most solidly pro-choice states in the union.

Just plowing some profits back into the war legitimization business. You can't have a military industrial complex without a constant infusion of fresh war blood. And that means polishing the odd bloody turd, like Cheney.

11. When Cheney's heart gives out, I will dance with joy
and many in this world will set aside differences and dance with joy (privately of course).

We are counting the the hours until his festering heart, blackened by the senseless slaughter of a million or more, beats its last hollow thud.

There is great evil in this world and Cheney is infected with it.

His passing will be a moment of world joy and solidarity as he accepts his final tenure, tortured in the bowels of hell by the very lives he destroyed.

Here on earth, we will embrace the natural justice of his passing.

But, be quick and ready with celebrations. Barely a nanosecond will elapse between his passing and the next evil that will inhabit his fungus filled shoes.

spent seven years there in Laramie getting my bachelor's and master's degrees. Plenty of rednecks, true, but plenty of liberals and progressives in Laramie as well. Wyoming is conservative, but more in the libertarian bent than anything else (a lot of libertarians were just as pissed at the Cheney/Bushie administration as we are).

In any case, this isn't the first time people have protested Cheney in his home state:

Cheney's neighbors topple him in protest

Had I been there I would have made it 101 protesters. I suspect some of those protesters are from Colorado.

To put his name on an International Studies center is as ridiculous as it would have been to name a wing in the university's law school since he doesn't believe in the rule of law. If they had had a torture center it would have been perfect.
