Peter Costello during Question Time.Despairing Liberal MPs yesterday vowed to push for an orderly change-over of the prime ministership to Treasurer Peter Costello if John Howard continued to lose popular support.
Some MPs were bold enough to suggest the campaign after being heartened by the outing in a newspaper report of a Victorian splinter group who allegedly urged Mr Costello to overthrow the Prime Minister before the May budget.
Mr Howard's supporters were yesterday hosing down speculation that he was under threat, fuelled by the Treasurer's repeated refusal to rule out a leadership challenge last week.
But some MPs who think Mr Costello offers the best chance at retaining government say they will now privately "spruik" the change-over scenario if the Coalition's support continues to plummet.
