Activists topple towers, claim dangers of AM radio waves
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 03:36 AM by yowzayowzayowza
Source: CNN

A group cited by U.S. officials as a domestic terrorism threat claimed responsibility Friday for knocking down two radio station towers in Snohomish County, Washington.

The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) issued a statement saying opponents of the towers argue that "AM radio waves cause adverse health effects including a higher rate of cancer, harm to wildlife, and that the signals have been interfering with home phone and intercom lines."

"When all legal channels of opposition have been exhausted, concerned citizens have to take action into their own hands to protect life and the planet," Jason Crawford, a spokesman for the group, said in a news release.

Members of ELF have been sentenced for acts of domestic terrorism in the past.

1. saw this on our local news-those towers are huge!
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 03:47 AM by freeplessinseattle
those people are nuts. I really cringe when the fringe element does something like this. Now if they were to topple Limbaugh, the real danger from AM airwaves, that'd be different...

This reminds me of when I lived maybe a 1/4 mile from a Christian radio station, and sometimes our home phone would pick up signals. We'd laugh about it, even thought it was annoying-we could even hear it sometime when the phone was hung up-but at the same time it was kind of creepy. Imagine if someone was already a little mental and didn't know why voices talking about Jesus were coming through the phone.

76. Please, Don't Be A Bunch Of Morons
There is no real organization called the Earth Liberation Front.

It exist as a set of guidelines and maybe a website.

Anyone can call themselves the ELF.

This includes people who just want to make environmentalist and environmentalism look bad- which, incidentally, is what "ELF" does best.

Back in the 60s and early 70s, the FBI got clever and started promoting the most lunatic people and groups in an attempt to discredit the real citizens who opposed the Vietnam war. This was called COINTELPRO.

Recently, it was reported that right wing radio "personality" Hal Turner was a long time FBI informant and that his ravings were merely a honey trap to draw flies. Maybe.

The point is, when you read shit like this, take it with a grain of salt. People are capable of anything, including knocking down two radio towers because the ray beams are killing the chipmunks, or knocking down two radio towers then claiming you're ELF so as to turn all environmentalists into dangerous terrorists.

She was an informant, and got to this point where she was even having sex with one of the guys. She'd provide the materials, they'd commit the crime. A lot of people got jail time over it. I expect the same here.

Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 06:15 AM by OneTwentyoNine
So why the Hell hasn't Operation Rescue been named as a domestic terrorist group? Political pressure to much for that ranking?!?!

Read what they consider a group needs to do to fit that category and then compare it to OR. Plus we have a thug in jail right here in Wichita with DEEP ties to OR that did commit murder--something that ELF has not done so far.

25. Operation Rescue are Obama's siblings in Christ
and he always stands with his faith mates. When Christian bigots attack gay people, Obama praises them as 'good, decent, and moral people' and promises them a place at his table in perpetuity.
Take Eric Prince. During the campaign Obama said he's a good Christian and he has retained Blackwater Mercenaries in spite of convictions for smuggling illegal arms into the Untied States. On the other hand he fires Lt Choi, and literally hundreds of brave volunteers for being outside of the dogma he and Prince share. He hires those he respects and fires those he does not. Eric Prince makes millions off of Obama. Lt Choi, well, no benefits for you, Lt. Volumes are spoken by those twin actions.

go to ELF's own website for pete's sake. they ADVOCATE illegal activity, to include vandalism, etc.

OR does no such thing.

sure people with "ties" to OR have committed crimes. people with "ties" to the dem and repub parties have too.

OR does not ADVOCATE for politically motivated acts of vandalism/terrorism.

ELF does. and their website offers ample proof, as well as their extensive history.

10. Yes, destroying property is terrorism. Killing or threatening to kill people is not.
I'm no fan of ELF, but why is it 'terrorism' to blow up a radio tower but not to threaten and then kill a doctor who is performing abortions? How can a right-wing lunatic walk into a liberal church and start mowing people down for being liberal and he's not a terrorist, but if you burn an unoccupied SUV or a partly built ski-lodge you are? Why are people who never harmed another person in jail as terrorists, but someone who blew up a civilian jetliner in flight is walking around Florida free as a bird?

It's like the 9-11 terrorists not being charged with terrorism because they killed people, but because they destroyed airplanes and buildings.

15. something not right (credible) about this story
I know environmental activists, like Greenpeace, and they don't talk like that. freepers and
rw whack jobs talk like that when they try to imitate environmentalists. These
"environmentalists" seem clueless whacks.

Second, toppling radio towers smacks more of a competitor than an environmental group. A big fat clue
appears in the claim of responsibility which says " signals have been interfering
with home phone and intercom lines." OhooooooOOOOoooo, I get it. "Environmentalists", sure.

And who is Jason Crawford? WTF? If he claims to be the spokesman he is a confessed accessory
and should be in custody. Oh, nobody knows who he is??? Right. Gettin it.

The story is not credible on multiple points, is vague on its main critical points and
this appears deliberate. A propaganda piece. More scary "terrorists", oooooo.

But why the F* doesn't CNN and the M$M do their homework? No sensible person should be
swallowing this swill. Yet what possible motive could they have to pump out this bilge?
What and Why? What and Why?

yup... something just not right about this story.

44. There may well be some truth to their complaints about bleed over
At one of my previous residences we had the same problem. Some of the local geeks borrowed enough gear to check it out. The station was well in excess of standard for bleed over and really was trashing the adjacent parts of the spectrum. Documented it and went to the station. No response. Took the same documentation to the FCC. No action. One night some of their equipment fired. New equipment, no problems.

62. the last eight years have tried everyone's patience...
the guy in charge of the FCC was Don Barzinni, I think. lawless.
I think we have passed that, but that doesn't mean Obama's FCC is being
effective, even now. Our federal government has been hijacked, the people
are screwed until we pass real campaign finance reform and hand a few lobbiests
over to the hangman.

True, sometimes a group of vigilante's will act when governments are corrupt.
It doesn't make it "legal". But their actions are always judged on the
reasons, the necessity what they did. Thus it is invariably the case that
they present a compelling argument for their action. They want people to know
why, and they want it to to be damn convincing .

Here in San Francisco last century corruption was pretty rampant, a supervisor with
essentially complete political cover shot and killed (cold-blooded murder on the
street) a rival supervisor. He was held in a cell temporarily but it quickly
became apparent he would be released and not prosecuted. A vigilante group of
about 200 men, armed to the teeth, took him and hung him with another. Thereafter they
organized and waited for the army to arrive. The us president declined the
invitation, and eventually the group disbanded, law and order magically restored to
the city (for a time). The news accounts may be consulted. The bell used to summon
the vigilantes is reputedly still there, (i have not seen it, but maybe I'll go
look for it). A local resident was asked if vigilantees were still in the area, and he
sardonically replied "ring the bell and see". True story, AFAIK.

72. absurd, factually incorrect post
Edited on Sun Sep-06-09 12:33 AM by paulsby
almost everything you say is wrong. i'll give you one example

"And who is Jason Crawford? WTF? If he claims to be the spokesman he is a confessed accessory
and should be in custody. Oh, nobody knows who he is??? Right. Gettin it."

you have exactly ZERO understanding of american law. being a spokesman for a group that has engaged in a criminal act does NOT make one an accessory under the law.

endless examples of this abound. read up on the requirements for accessory before the fact, and after the fact. in ANY state penal code or the federal penal code (fwiw, i work in WA as a LEO. i know our penal code, and the federal codes involving accessories). in no way, shape or form can a SPOKESPERSON be arrested for doing what crawford did. if i were to arrest crawford for being an "accessory", i would be making a false arrest

the only thing that is "not right" is your ridiculous analysis. sorry. FAIL

ELF sucks , fwiw. whether or not purely property targeted acts are "terrorism" is purely semantical. under most definitions it is, but all it is , is an argument about definition of a word. call them criminal assmunches, if it makes you happy

74. ok, your disagreement is noted. proof and conclusions incorrect.
Always glad to see LEOs posting in DU.
Not arresting is always an option. You should only arrest when you are sure.
I commend your attitude. I is a correct one, I think.

However, your legal knowledge is incomplete. You should go back to school.
In any event it is more than likely that you would not be arresting such a
person without a warrant obtained by the DA.
The DA will not have great difficulty getting one, I think.

For frankly it seems essentially impossible to be a "spokesman" for a criminal
organization reporting credit for their crimes etc , without finding yourself REASONABLY SUSPECTED
of participation in some manner. Thus they will generally end up either before a grand jury, sitting
in the dock as a material witness (soon to be charged with something), or being investigated for
tax evasion and felonious mopery.

your comment on "terrorism" is interesting, but remember that "terrorism" is a word, now an inflammatory
label assigned to a set of crimes which have always been crimes, but which have recently been given a
politically elevated status in which rules of law and protections of law are suddenly deemed inconvenient,
due process and such, thus dispensed with. In other words, this is the language of a police state.
No offense.

83. you don't understand the law
Edited on Mon Sep-07-09 04:28 PM by paulsby
it is NOT probable cause, which is the standard for arrest, that the spokesman was an "accessory" by acting as a SPOKESPERSON for a group. whether or not i went to a prosecuting attorney or decided to make the arrest myself, neither a PA or a cop is authorized to make an arrest WITHOUT probable cause. you believe that merely by the statement the guy made based on what you read in the article that there is now probable cause.

sorry, that's blatantly wrong

that is simply black letter law.

many groups that engage in illegal activities have spokesman. the spokesman are not being an accessory to a crime, to report that the group is taking credit for the crime

sorry. you don't know the law. it's that simple

have you even READ WA state's penal code?

i suggest not
this is common and boring. people who don't understand the ACTUAL law, but think they do (too many episodes of law and order or CSI), opine that a law has been broken WHEN IT HASN'T

specifically, based on what crawford said,

*****what SPECIFIC CRIME is there now probable cause for?****

cite it.

feel free to peruse WA state's penal code. i can give you a link if you need it.

as for terrorism thing. many people think terrorist acts ONLY involve harms to persons, others include harm to property. regardless of which camp you fall in, it's just a semantical wank. it's an argument over word definition.

but in brief, under the FEDERAL STANDARD (and WA state case law does not give cops additional powers to investigate terrorist vs. non-terrorist crimes), yes - destruction of property CAN meet the definition of terrorism.

regardless, ELF are a bunch of criminal assmunches, and i hope they get caught and sent to prison

i have little doubt they did this, if they are taking credit for it. and of course, the other poster is wrong - being a spokesman for ELF and reporting that ELF is taking credit for the crime, does not make one an "accessory". that's hogwash.

we consider ELF a "terrorist" threat in that they commit crimes in order to further a political cause, while causing MASSIVE damage to property/infrastructure

according to the ELF press office, they use "

economic sabotage and guerrilla warfare to stop the exploitation and destruction of the environment".

i cannot give any any info that is specifically LEO only, so i can speak to general publically available information, and that's all i'll address.

ELF uses the techniques of terrorist groups/. they operate in cells, they espouse a manifesto, etc. as to justify their actions (most common criminals do not promote alleged justification for their acts, at least not when they are at large. of course, when they are ARRESTEd, that's a different story).

fwiw, here is a link to the actual web site for the ELF press office.

http://www.elfpressoffice.org/

their full press release in right there on the site, in regards to this incident in Sno county.

ELF Press Office and their spokespeople (allegedly) receives ANONYMOUS communiques from cell members, and is thus not privy to their identities and CANNOT be prosecuted as ACCESSORIES merely for reporting that ELF members are taking credit AFTER the fact for crimes already committed.

an accessory, which the previous poster must not understand, is somebody who assists (before, during or after) a crime occurs in furthering the crime.

reporting after the fact that they did the crime does NOT make one an "accessory"

it is not in contention that ELF does not target PERSONS (or animals fwiw), and to my knowledge , no persons or animals (apart from maybe some insects or wilderness creatures maybe) have been harmed in any of their acts (to my knowledge. i could be wrong).

it's pretty clear they do not TARGET persons, and in fact go out of their way to AVOID harm to persons.

of course, when they burn down "mcmansions" or "luxury vehicles" they most definitely harm persons, just not the physical bodies of the persons, which is the distinction.

and they have done both. numerous times.

if a bunch of neo nazis spray paint my house with threats because they don't like my politics, ethnicity, etc, is that an act of terrorism? yes.

if a bunch of ELF assmunches burn down my house because they think that "mcmansions" are harmful to the environment, and therefore the homeowners can be deprived of their property for not having the same beliefs, is that an act of terrorism?

absolultey.

so, yes in MY OPINION (and the FBI's) they are terrorists.

period.

but it is BETTER that they are terrorists that don't TARGET people.

iow, in the hierarchy of evil, terrorists who target property (personally and corporately owned alike, which is what ELF admittedly does) are LESS evil than those that attack people.

but they are still terrorists

You and I probably don’t agree much of the time. But I certainly respect your opinion.

Elf has taken credit. So, somebody should go to their Washington DC office and ask for 'damages' to private property.

You can tighten or loosen your wind turban by 'tacking' into the wind like a sailboat.

Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 09:06 AM by Gold Metal Flake
People still have home intercoms? I picture some angry retiree working in his upstairs den on a model of the USS Hornet who can't call downstairs to his wife for his mid day cup of coffee because when he presses the talk button all she can hear is a Geico commercial.

I'll just wait and see on this one.

36. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around their justification
Biological effects of radio waves are frequency-dependent, in that the higher the frequency the worse the harm. Hence, FM signals are worse than AM signals, television worse than FM, and the various microwave systems--phone, satellite TV, what have you--are worse than television. So if the ELFers were really concerned about health effects they woulda dropped something like a cell phone tower or a television antenna. But they didn't--they went after an AM system. I kinda discount the notion ELF would commit terrorism because the radio signals are interfering with people's home intercom systems--ELF is the kind of group who would tell someone that's pissed off about RFI on their home intercoms, "tough--you shouldn't have a home intercom in the first place. Save the planet, man."

I did a bit of research and found other reasons for this: KRKO, who owns the towers in question, is owned by the Skotdal family. They are expanding the site these towers are on to hold five towers--up from two--which is pissing off a lot of the locals because the site's between two parks, the towers are massive and radio broadcast antennas are ugly. Apparently there have been a lot of challenges to their permitting. The Skotdals also own Skotdal Real Estate, the largest commercial realty firm in Everett, WA. The Skotdals are Republican, as you'd guessed; opensecrets.org lists Arthur Skotdal--probably the patriarch of the family--as having given $500 to Mitt Romney and Craig Skotdal as having given $1000 to John McCain. In the 2006 cycle, Craig gave $250 each to the Repukes running against Maria Cantwell and in the 2nd Congressional District, both of whom lost. We're not talking massive contribution levels--none of these contributions approaches FEC limits, and there are no soft money donations observed here--but there's also no influence hedging, in that he didn't give a nickel to a Democrat in case said D won the election. The guy's a Repuke.

Also, I'm not sure this really was an ELF attack. Oh, it definitely COULD have been. It also could have been just some ordinary schmuck who decided to destroy the towers for whatever reason, and gave credit to ELF so they wouldn't come looking for him. What gives it credence as an ELF attack is that ELF isn't denouncing it in any way, shape or form. If they didn't do it, they probably would have issued a statement similar to the ones the anti-woman groups made after Dr. Tiller was killed, where they denounced the use of violence while simultaneously attacking the Skotdals for ruining the environment, causing fifteen different kinds of cancer, bringing about the downfall of the American Way of Life and improperly profiting off the backs of others. So I'd say there's about a 75 percent chance it's an ELF attack.

I would put down the real justifications for these attacks as:

1. being against the Skotdals' expansion plans for this site--this is at the top of the list because there's a known anti-site-expansion coterie. See http://www.stopkrko.com/.
2. being against the towers that are already there
3. being against some other project the Skotdals were involved in--maybe a Walmart? But destroying Walmarts is way more complicated than destroying radio towers; they're huge, they're made of concrete and there are always people in them so if you DO destroy one people will die and the cops will be looking much harder for you. Destroying a radio tower is child's play next to destroying a Walmart for two reasons--no one goes out there in the middle of the night unless the transmitter quits working, and you can drop one by uprooting one guy wire and standing back.
4. or being against the Skotdals personally. Have the Skotdales done something (besides planning to destroy the view of the Snohomish Valley by building five radio towers in the middle of it, that is) or said something to piss off the environmentalists? I'm certain there have been hearings in the past on some of their projects where the Skotdals attacked people who were against a new development. Environmentalists have really long memories. And ELF has a history of taking direct action against people who they think are ruining the environment.

Right Wing AM talk show hosts have been proven to cause sociopathy and severe brain shrinkage.

Anti-environmental messages on these same talk shows have been know to cause the destruction of vital natural habitats.

56. I get that ELF likes to blow up and set stuff on fire, but.....
This hardly seems like an environmental issue. It would make sense if it was a huge strip mall or McMansion development or hummer dealership, but the radio tower things just don't make sense... Of course it could be them, but I won't be surprised if it was some neighbors who didn't like the interference or sore sight. Although, it might also very be a few ignorant and misguided "environmentalist", but I there more than a couple retards who were behind this. Ehnn.

I wonder how profitable this station was.

Since media consolidation began, values of radio stations have plummeted.
