Royal Genes May Win Kerry the White House
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 11:04 AM by rodbarnett
LONDON (Reuters) - The U.S. presidential election will be largely fought over Iraq (news - web sites) and the economy, but if royal genes have anything to do with the result, Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) is destined to dethrone George W. Bush this November.

According to a theory its British proponents say has proved surprisingly accurate over the past century, the candidate with the bluest blood in his veins will win the White House. In 2000 it was Bush. This time, it's Kerry.

"Our research is not yet complete but my bet is that Kerry has more royal connections and that he is more noble than President Bush (news - web sites)," said Harold Brooks-Baker, publishing director of Burke's Peerage, a guide to the aristocracy.

"But both candidates have a remarkable number of royal connections and both are related to (Britain's) Queen Elizabeth," he added.

comment : seems that both candidates have more in common than just being "skull & bonesmen"

1. That's the biggest bunch of malarkey I've ever heard
as if the royals had something specific in their heritage that promoted success. Bunch of opportunistic dinosaurs!

27. Actually, the theory was right in 2000
I've been following this theory as long as I've been following presidential elections and the theory specifically stated in 2000, Bush and Gore were entirely to close to call. They were both approximately equally related to the Queen.

Here I was ruining my eyes looking at computer screens and microfilm, sending fee after fee to vital records offices. What I should have really done was run for public office! :-)

6. Interesting but silly
these are people who like to prop up the monarchy in the UK by saying "See! See! even powerbrokers abroad are "related" to the queen!"

And the thought that JK and * might be related, however distantly, is appalling.

20. Kerry is more closely related to FDR than to Bush
Kerry's closest connection to Bush is through someone who came to Massachusetts in the
early 1600's. But he's related to FDR through a Scottish immigrant named James Murray,
who arrived in America in the middle 1700's. One of Murray's daughters married John Forbes
and was Kerry's great-great-great-great-grandmother. Another daughter was Franklin Roosevelt's great-great-grandmother.

The part that should make you uneasy is just how many presidents have come out of that same
pool of New England ancestors. Kerry's problem isn't being related to Bush -- it's being part
of the traditional quasi-aristocracy. (He's actually related to FDR in two different ways --
and to Calvin Coolidge in two different ways as well.)

7. Leave it to the Brits to bring pedigree into it. They have that in common
with New England elite. Pedigree is everything.

Well, I've got royal blood in my genes too. And mine trumps Kerry's.
So maybe I should run for office.

15. Is there anyone with English ancestry
who is not descended from some English king? Small country, lots of generations, a couple of prolific monarchs and pretty soon everyone's related.

Geesh. This comes up every national election, as if it made any difference. It's all part of the East Coast, Anglocentric view of American history that ignores the fact that a number of other cultures contributed to the making of this country. My favorite rant: people who claim George III of Great Britain was the last king of the US, ignoring (to give one example), Ferdinand VII of Spain, who at least nominally reigned over a much bigger piece of what is now the US until the 1820s.

There, I feel better now.

Linda, not related to anybody

18. They also predicted Bush on November 6, 2000
http://www.guardian.co.uk/US_election_race/Story/0,2763,393341,00.html

Victory is in the blood for 'aristocratic' Republican

Special report: the US elections

Press Association
Monday November 6, 2000
The Guardian

"...The Republican George W Bush will be elected US president on November 7 because he has more royal blood than his opponent, it was claimed today.

The Texas governor has twice as many ties with aristocrats than his Democrat rival Al Gore, according to Burke's Peerage.

The company, which publishes books on ancestry, aristocracy and history, has predicted the outcome of the presidential race for almost 200 years. It says the candidate with the most royal blood has always been the victor.

Mr Bush has direct descents from William the Conqueror, Henry II and Charles II, according to Burke's Peerage...."

John F. Kennedy is also a descendant of Brian Boru, allegedly. So I guess with Democrats we get a benevolent monarchy, and with Republicans a malevolent one.

21. Doesn't help -- Bush is also descended from Brian Boru
Brian Boru's gggg-granddaughter, Eve of Leinster, married an English lord, Richard "Strongbow" de Clare. Their daughter Isabel married William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. They had five daughters who, as great heiresses, married six different leading English lords. So anybody who is descended from English nobility is bound to be descended from Brian Boru as well.

Genealogy is a game you can't win, because everybody is related to everybody. Taken rightly, it does more to level the playing field than to reinforce aristocratic pretensions.

22. Turns out Kennedy wasn't a direct descendant of Brian Boru
rather of his brother. The Boru line became O'Briens (at least according to this):

The Kennedy Clan of Ireland

"...King Brian Boru decreed a law around 1000 that all families or clans should possess a surname and suggested that they should choose an illustrious ancestor after whom to name themselves. Due to his achievements, Brian’s family chose to call themselves O’Brien, descendants of Brian.

One of his brothers was Donchuan (Duncan?), whose son was named after Donchuan’s father, Cinneidigh. It is this line from which the Irish O’Kennedys descend. They held the title of Lords of Ormond and were powerful until the 1500s. O’Kennedy/Kennedy is the 16th most popular name in Ireland, with the majority living in County Tipperary. Other strong areas are Clare and Dublin in the south and Antrim in the north (these being mostly Scots Kennedys)...."
