Sotomayor Quits Women's Club After GOP Criticism
Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 08:53 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: ABC News

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor resigned Friday from an elite all-women's club after Republicans questioned her participation in it. Sotomayor said she resigned from the Belizean Grove to prevent the issue from becoming a distraction in her confirmation hearings.

In a letter to Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the federal appeals court judge said she is convinced that the club does not practice "invidious discrimination" and that her membership in it did not violate judicial ethics.

But she said she didn't want questions about it to "distract anyone from my qualifications and record."

Federal judges are bound by a code that says they shouldn't join any organization that discriminates by race, sex, religion or nationality.

4. Why do people cower to the repubs moral "authority?"
I'm SO sick of everyone placating the repubs and their constant whining. They demand apologies, they scream in indignation, and every one cowers. WTF? They certainly don't abide by the rules that they impose on others.

Her membership did not violate judicial ethics. I'm sure there are many more clubs that are more insidious than a woman only club. Sometimes people just like to be with their own kind. So what? If it was a man in a mens only club you can bet the repubs wouldn't have said anything because to many of them belong to same clubs.

23. Denied membership? That's an interesting question
since they ask you to join, you can't apply. I don't suppose an all male-organization that defines itself as all male and only invites men to join would be acceptable.

And if others are in a similiarly discriminatory organization then obviously they shouldn't have been approved. But I don't think that can be changed now. So past mistakes cannot be used as an excuse for future mistakes.

9. She still with "La Raza"
That's the one that disturbs me. Racial superiority clubs are not cool, no matter which race they think is the best one.

14. Who said La Raza is a "racial superiority club?" And who said Sotomayor is a member?

Hint. World Net Daily doesn't count.

And what is a "racial superiority club" anyway?

24. clearly you know absolutely nothing about la raza
The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) – the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States – works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations (CBOs), NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas – assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families.

Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, DC. NCLR serves all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country and has operations in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

no mention of racial superiority, unlike the KKK, Aryan Nations, etc.

10. The right wing will never, EVER shut up.
Why should they? It usually works. They get what they want.

What if she had just stayed in the club, and not responded at all to their whining? Would Obama have fired her?

I realize that it was probably the prudent thing to do, to quit the club, but I feel it was not a strong or wise thing to do. :(

I'd bet that most of the 100+ Supreme Court justices belonged to an all male club and no one ever raised the point.

25. Because you cannot be "denied membership"
if it isn't offered. It is an exclusive club that only invites people to join, there is no membership process for individuals to sign up. And so far they've only allowed in women.
