MANCHESTER, N.H. — Self-styled insurgent Howard Dean has captured the political limelight after an impressive second quarter of fund-raising, prompting favorable comparisons to such political mavericks as Gene McCarthy and John McCain.

Like McCarthy and McCain, Dean has energized a younger bloc of voters through no-compromise rhetoric and innovative campaigning for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination.

But insurgents seldom win, and some political experts already are wondering whether Dean has peaked too soon, spent too much money — he has less cash on hand than many of his rivals — and portrayed himself as a liberal at odds with his moderate record as governor of Vermont....more >>

...and he hasn't peaked yet!

He's going to peak in November of 2004....

2. Perfect timing
Energized the liberal base for the primary, moves to the center as a moderate for the main election.

3. I'm sooooo tired of this
"portrayed himself as a liberal" - uh, no, it's the media that is characterizing him as a liberal. If he's a liberal, what does that make Kucinich?

4. I LOVE when Dean is underestimated...
...makes it all that much more fun when his support continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

The media and the DLC have him pegged as an "insurgent". The reason he's so popular is that he's NOT. He's a pragmatic centrist who isn't afraid to make waves, and he has ideas that appeal to a wide cross-section of Americans. Sfecap's right, his campaign is going to peak in Nov. '04.

5. Spin, spin spin - Dick Morris, Karl Rove, DLC and many others
are making stupid comparisons and taking all the wrong lessons from the past - why is this piece of crap breaking news?
I pick a candidate based on what he/she does, says, believes - not based on any BS strategist tells me that the "handicap" is. There's zero information here.

10. OK I know I am going to get some
people's panties in a wad. But Bill Clinton did also say that Dean is unelectable also. I like Dean, I like his fire, he is getting alot of important issues out there and keeping them there. He is great for our party and great for our movement. However, I might have to agree with that analysis. OK now go ahead, let me have it.
