U.S. Sends Seven Russians Home from Guantanamo

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Authorities in the United States have sent seven Russian citizens home from the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday.

This is the first time the release of any Russian prisoners from the U.S.-run camp in Cuba has been announced. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the prisoners would remain in custody on their return.

``The individuals were received by the relevant department of the Justice Ministry for further dispatch to a place of detention for preliminary investigations into their criminal cases,'' a Russian foreign ministry statement said.

One detainee's mother last year pleaded for the U.S. not to send her son back home, saying indefinite detention without trial by them was better than being in a Russian prison.
