Poll: Third of Republicans view party unfavorably
Source: USA Today

WASHINGTON — In thinking about the Republican Party's troubles, consider this: One-third of Republicans now say they have an unfavorable opinion of their party.

There's no such dyspepsia among Democrats. Just 4% have an unfavorable view of their party.

The findings of a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll underscore the perilous state of the GOP. Over the past three years, Republicans have lost control of the White House, the House of Representatives and the Senate, and they're now struggling to forge a unified response to the popular new Democratic president.

-----

Asked by Gallup "what comes to mind when you think of the Republican Party," 25% of those surveyed said "unfavorable" and another 1 in 4 offered negative assessments including "no direction," "close-minded" and "poor economic conditions." Sixteen percent said conservative and 7% "favorable."

6. Unfavorable, in what way?
Current Party too liberal? Or too wedded to their special interests? Kind of useless without context.

Democrats can still fail to produce and loose enough votes to make these ding-bats feel loved again.

13. wish the Party wasn't just a dump for right wingers - a good debate keeps dems honest

but having said that - when the other side IS a dump for right wingers, they can have it and let the debate come from other sources of thought if it must - intelligent debate is all we ask

my biological family are all totally disenchanted with the GOP, after 8 yrs of Bush, who they voted for. but they dont like Obama...they call him "OBushma"...they said they see the same policies in some of his decisions that Bush made..
the Dems are sqaundering the chance to be the populist voice.

15. My parents voted for Bush and voted for McCain.
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 02:42 PM by Jennicut
I think Obama, having an approval rating in the mid 60's will be just fine. My parents liked Bush, hate Obama but are a small minority. The rest of the conservatives went independent and voted libertarian and a few jumped ship to the Dems. The Obama = Bush meme is hilarious to me considering my parents are diehard conservatives and consider him to be a commie loving evil socialist.

17. my family uses the word socialist too but
they also see Obama as part of the bush/corporate crowd...backing the bankers instead of the people...thats why I wish the Dems, many of them, werent such sellouts..they have an opportunity, right now, to be the voice of the people...and they arent taking it.

16. This is what happens when you ignore the middle
The Republicans went from appealing to the center-right (i.e. Reagan Democrats) to only the right wing of their own party. An incredible shrinking tent, consigning their electoral fortunes to oblivion for a generation. Today, they are the party of the angry, the paranoid, and the hateful.

Nice work! And, hey, moderate Republicans, you should give up the ghost. There's no way the party of Bush, Cheney and Palin will ever change course. The only respectable thing to do is to become Democrats. Decent, responsible people simply are not Republicans any more: it's unseemly.

Plus, none of them can spell or use punctuation.
