Suicide jumper pushed off bridge
Source: Sydney Morning Herald (Oz)

A man in southern China has been taken into police custody after pushing a would-be suicide jumper off a bridge frequented by people threatening to end their lives, state press reported.

Lai Jiansheng was detained by police for pushing a man named Chen off the bridge in Guangzhou city that has been the site of 12 suicide attempts since the beginning of April, the China Daily said...

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their actions violate a lot of public interests," the paper quoted Lai as saying.

Lai, upset with the traffic delay, broke through the police cordon on the bridge, walked up to Chen and shook his hand before pushing him off the bridge, it said.

3. If he was pushed, then he is not a jumper or a suicide.
He is a murder victim.

......

The would-be jumper fell eight meters into a partially-inflated emergency cushion and came away from the incident with his life intact but his back injured, it said.

If this happened in Washington state,
I wonder if he would get a lawyer to 'assist' him in a twisted lawsuit ? How would the media cover it ?

8. You are right, should be "attempted murder" victim.
Or something. You can actually sympathize with the pusher a bit, without necessarily approving. Traffic in Asia can be amazing, it's not the first time, it doesn't sound like there was any intent to do great harm. Should drive the judge nuts.

I was just after the headline writer for calling him a "suicide jumper" when he clearly was not.

13. He pushed a guy off a bridge. The story does not say he knew a "partially inflated" cushion
existed, let alone that it would save the guy's life, leaving him "only" with an injured back. (Ever had a back injury? Very painful, sitting or standing, maybe even lying down, and they usually mess up your back for the rest of your life.)

I really don't know how you can reasonably conclude from the article that the pusher was without intent to do great harm.

16. The story makes the distinction, twice, even if the headline doesn't.
The story calls the man a 'would-be suicide jumper.' Just as, having survived, he now should be called a 'would-be' murder victim.

27. China bridge jumper 'gets a push'
Source: BBC

A man threatening to commit suicide by jumping from a Chinese bridge was approached by a passer-by who shoved him over the edge, local media say.

Lai Jiansheng, 66, said he was fed up with the desperate man's "selfish activity" which caused huge traffic jams in Guangzhou, southern China.

Chen Fuchao fell 26ft (8m) on to an air cushion and is recovering in hospital, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Xinhua said Mr Lai was "taken away by police", but gave no further details.

But I do think that too many of us are too absorbed in meaningless distraction to pay attention to what is really important.

How could the state of today have happened if we were paying attention?

I will NEVER forget the nearly 3-hour commute home that day (normally took 30 minutes).

Jumper on Bridge Causes Gridlock
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/wilson/wilson110598.htm

"Police said the 32-year-old man, apparently upset because of a domestic dispute, climbed onto the wall at the edge of the span about 1:07 p.m. and told construction workers on the ground below that he planned to jump."

Quite frankly, the thought of pushing him myself crossed my mind. I figured he'd live once he hit the water, which he did. He was immediately fished out of the river by rescue boat workers.
