New Orleans Gets 2013 Super Bowl, Its 10th

New Orleans is a Super Bowl city again.

NFL owners voted Tuesday to play the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans, the first time the championship game will be played there since Hurricane Katrina shredded parts of the Louisiana Superdome. The hurricane caused 1,600 deaths and devastated the Gulf Coast four years ago.

New Orleans beat out Miami -- which sought a record 11th Super Bowl -- and 2008 host Glendale, Ariz., for the game. This is the 10th time New Orleans will be the site for the Super Bowl.

''It's a great day for our community,'' Saints owner Tom Benson said as he walked onto an elevator at a South Florida hotel, on his way to the formal announcement.

1. That's great news - Super Bowls in NOLA
are considered some of the best. You can't beat the French Quarter for wonderful food and a good time.

12. First - go to Cafe Du Monde and have
some Community Coffee and beignets, then you MUST go to the Acme Oyster House and eat as many as you can - when you are down there, mosey over to the Cats Meow for a bit of fun - it's located right by a pretty good balcony that will produce some bead throwing .. wink wink nudge nudge - and the The Old Absinthe House Bar is right down the street...

I miss the food the most - and having Community Coffee available at every grocery store around. Have a blast!

16. Haha...I'm there 2-3 times per year....
All good suggestions. I still say that Cat's Meow has the best hurricanes in town.

And it should.

4. If they built a covered stadium...
...it would surely have come to NY. Well, NJ to be exact! They'll never hold a Superbowl in the North in an open stadium, and rightly so.

The new stadium costs upwards of $1 billion and they couldn't build a retractable roof!

Would have been perfect for Superbowl and/or a major college bowl game. Probably could have even been a great option for Final Four, since it's normally held in indoor football stadiums converted into basketball arenas.

5. It can be done.
NY weather is unpredictable in January. It will be cold. But it's almost certain it will be 20+ and likely close to 30. It's possible that it would be cold, but not Green Bay cold.

6. But NFL will never choose a city knowing that it will be around freezing temps...
Edited on Tue May-19-09 04:54 PM by sledgehammer
...at the time of the Superbowl, and windchill to boot. Not to mention a decent chance of snow/ice.

Green Bay, Foxboro, etc. playoff games are not selected - these games have to be played because of home advantage.

NY/NJ would have been a guaranteed Superbowl host by 2015 had there been a retractable roof. And a Final Four host as well. The additional revenue would have been worth the cost of the roof.

Poor decision to do away with the retractable roof. I mean the Jets/Olympic proposed stadium in Manhattan was to have a retractable roof.

7. Super Bowl should be like BCS Championship Game
Rotate it between NOLA, Miami, Pasadena, and Glendale. No more Jacksonvilles or (egads!) Detroits.

9. Dallas as well...
They have an incredible stadium coming up, and are hosting in 2011.

Houston (Reliant) is also a decent host.

Indianapolis is getting the Superbowl in 2012. Can't say I love that idea, but whatever.

10. The Detroit super bowl went great
There's no reason to not allow all cities an opportunity to host the game.

8. And wouldn't it be great if the Saints played in the Superbowl in New Orleans?
And a few before then...like 2010, 2011, 2012 - well, after Katrina...

Good news for the city. Put us in a rotation!

Might be just enough time.
