California Marine has swine flu; 30 quarantined

Source: Reuters Alertnet

LOS ANGELES, April 29 (Reuters) - About 30 U.S. Marines in southern California on the biggest military base in the United States have been quarantined after one of them was confirmed to have contracted the swine flu virus, the Marine Corps said on Wednesday.

The case was identified at the Twenty nine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center and was confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the base said in a statement.

The base has 8,000 active-duty Marines and is the primary training center for Marines and sailors deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The ill Marine is being treated as an outpatient at the base and will remain isolated at his barracks.

"He is doing well, and his condition continues to improve," the base statement said.

About 30 other Marines who had been "active socially" with him are being quarantined as well, the statement said. They will be permitted to return to full duty after five days if they display no flu-like symptoms, it added.''

1. HA! If I were a Marine, I'd call him my best friend!!
Five days off, playing video games in the barracks?

I'll bet half of those thirty hardly know the guy!

3. Some Nyquil, Chicken Soup and and lottsa Orange Juice will help them
once they get over the nausea. Sometimes a day or two in bed (if you aren't immune compromised) will do a lot and then you do the rest to build back your "immune system."

7. You say "immune system" like you know nothing
about it.

4. Oh, sh*t! I can see that Marine base from my deck!
Unlike Palin and Russia, this is a true statement. I live in Yucca Valley, about 20 miles from the MCAGCC at Twentynine Palms. Our house is on a hill and we often sit on the deck at night watching the Marines shoot off flares during night exercises. I hope the Marines involved are o.k.

5. My Dad, in basic training for WWII, came down with the measles right at the end of training.
13 weeks of training and they didn't have a single day off. They were not allowed off the base.
Finally, the 13 weeks were up.
Just as the men were getting passes to be able to go off base for some much needed R&R, my Dad came down with the measles.
Quarantine time.
To this day, Dad says his name was MUD on that base.
All passes were revoked. No one was allowed to leave base.

My Dad knows how this Marine feels. (Even though Dad was in the Army. LOL.)
