Well-liked’ Homeless Man Shot in Commerce

A transient who took care of stray dogs was gunned down in an alley in Commerce today in what authorities described as a “senseless murder.”

The violence occurred near Indiana Street and Union Pacific Avenue about 1:30 a.m., said Deputy Jeff Gordon of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

Witnesses heard gunshots and later saw the victim lying in the alley near the location, Gordon said. The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene, Gordon said. Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Rosenberg told KNX it was not known why anyone would kill the man, who took care of stray dogs in the area.

“He was a transient, Rosenberg said. “He hung out in this alleyway. He was well-liked, well-known by the truckers. He never created any problems. It’s a senseless murder.”

Anyone with information on the slaying was asked to call sheriff’s homicide detectives at [phone].
