Pressure grows on minister over torture claims
The pressure on the Government to investigate fresh allegations of complicity by British security officials in the torture of terror suspects intensified yesterday after MPs from all parties called for an inquiry into the claims.

In the House of Commons, ministers were challenged over the report in last weekend's Daily Telegraph that a further 15 cases had been uncovered along with that of Binyam Mohamed, the former Guantanamo Bay suspect.

Vera Baird, the Solicitor General, said that following the decision last month by Baroness Scotland, the Attorney General, to refer Mr Mohamed's claims to the police, it was open to any member of the public to approach officers with further information.

She was responding to a question from David Davis, the former shadow home secretary who now campaigns on civil liberties issues, who asked Mrs Baird why ministers had not asked the police to investigate the fresh allegations.

He said: "At the end of last week senior sources in MI5 and MI6 admitted that there were some 15 other cases similar to the Binyam Mohamed case.
