BREAKING: UPS Announces It Will Stop Advertising On Bill OReillys Show

In response to our Stop Supporting The OReilly Harassment Machine campaign, UPS told us yesterday that it was investigating whether to continue supporting OReillys show. We are sensitive to the type of television programming where our messages and presence are associated and continually review choices to affect future decisions, spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg told us.

Today UPS announced it will stop advertising on OReillys show. Here is the statement UPS emailed out just moments ago:

Thank you for sending an e-mail expressing concern about UPS advertising during the Bill OReilly show on FOX News. We do consider such comments as we review ad placement decisions which involve a variety of news, entertainment and sports programming. At this time, we have no plans to continue advertising during this show.

Thank you UPS!

137. I think it would be helpful to note here that the story is bogus.
Edited on Sat Mar-28-09 01:29 PM by BuyingThyme
Think Progress made it up.

The fact that UPS has no plans to advertise with O'Reilly does not mean that UPS has decided to stop advertising with O'Reilly. Think Progress made the story up out of thin air.

when she thanks her guests for being there, even if they're people she doesn't agree with, she does it so gracefully and graciously, and their responses are always - every damn time - sincere and warm?

She creates an atmosphere not at all confrontational, and I think her brilliance and her great questions and her sincere desire to get information makes her guests so comfortable.

I've never seen anything quite like it.

She's phenomenal, our Rachel ................

110. Little guy voters need to organize, period. No sense breaking it down into
consumers, union members, mom and pop stores, etc.

We need a progressive populist movement that is well organized and loud, and we need to freakin' fund it well with donations so that it stays independent of big companies.

Face it, both parties are corpratists.

They're basically being forced to internalize their Ground operations. Which will quickly lead to unionization. I Think we're seeing FedEx go though what UPS went through 10-15 years ago.

75. I agree with you, but if you have a "Goin Postal' or an independent Pack and Ship"
You should still go with what they offer you. They're all family owned and the only problem UPS still has is they don't offer discounts to anyone outside their UPS store brands, even though the markups at the UPS stores are WAY higher than most mom and pop shops. FedEx does, at least to the little guys trying to run a shipping business. It's actually kind of sad, I own a Goin Postal franchise. I do 10s of thousands of FedEx shipping a month. I earn what now amounts to a 45% discount on all FedEx shipping. They pay off immediately on all claims, their customer service is solid, and their drivers are all good people. But their political positions, specifically on Unions, are completely backwards. I've approached UPS sales people multiple times asking for discounts based on volume and they've repeatedly told me to go pound sand. I still pay $17 a week to have a UPS truck pick up customer dropoffs and I do sell UPS service if they demand it, but they really aren't very retail friendly. Sadly. It's just weird knowing the UPS Stores charge 10% more than ME!

http://investor.shareholder.com/ups/contact/contactus.c...

The above email address links to the UPS investor relations department. Here is the text I used: "Congratulations on the decision to terminate UPS advertising on the O'Reilly show and taking a positive step against their intrusive and offensive tactics, as well as the show's generally tasteless and crude tone. I definitely will try to increase my use of your services."

Positive feedback helps!

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the management of UPS for pulling advertising from "The O'Reilly Factor". For years, this program has harassed and demeaned any person who dares disagree with the host. I'm not for government censorship, but if market forces can finally get this creep off the air, I'm all for that.

62. what's funny is they didn't just quietly do this - they are making a definite statement by
announcing this as policy of the company.

I think they know who the nuts are and they are staying as far away as possible. O' Reilly's rape commentary and his recent chasing down of a blogger on her vacation by a couple of hacks seems to indicate he's scraping the barrel anyway. Just wait until Pat Roberts finally entirely fades from view.

The old guard of idiots is finally being swept into the gutter of history.

Yes, we know that there is no difference between Maddow and O'Reilly but the dynamic doesn't necessarily go that way. Ultimately if this becomes a big deal we could theoretically move toward a time where shows could all be vanilla (yes, of course, even more vanilla than now).

96. talk radio is where it really matters- oreilly is nothing w/out it, like all fox TV
--they depend on the talk radio monopoly to create the alternate reality that makes their BS less absurd and irrational.

the talk radio monopoly does the groundwork for the GOP and it is a protected monopoly so boycotting it in most red states on the local level, which don't have progressive alternatives, should be a no-brainer.

107. Here, have some info on Limbaugh Sponsors while we are at it

(This is from a different DU Thread, I did not write it)

Hi. My name is ____________________. I recently found out that your company advertises on Rush Limbaugh's show.

In the past, I've found his show distasteful and regrettable, but after Mr. Limbaugh's recent remarks -- wherein he said he hoped our new President would fail -- well, my feelings have changed. Our country is at war. And facing an historic global economic crisis. And Mr. Limbaugh wants our leadership to fail?

I know you're running a business and likely won't change anything because of the comments of one customer, but it makes me feel better to let you know that I can no longer patronize your business. And I'm encouraging thousands of others -- via email and the internet -- to to do the same.

I think it's time decent people stand together as one and support our President as he tries to solve the nation's problems. We may not have all voted for him, but who in good conscience -- especially in these dire times -- could wish for him to fail, as Mr. Limbaugh has done?

The entire world is looking at America right now as a sign of hope and possibility. We must succeed. We must not shame ourselves in the international spotlight by showcasing bigotry, racism, or petty politics.

Thank you for your time.

And I look forward to when I can patronize your business again.

Sincerely,

117. I think it's actually ABOUT TIME we go after Screwball....here's what I just sent off to eHarmony:
eHarmony is respected because it is about love and hope. I wish you wouldn't advertise on the Rush Limbaugh show. Rush Limbaugh is spewing political and personal venom at a time when our country and our people are hurting. Those seeking solace at eharmony shouldn't have to be poisoned by his hate. Please consider not advertising on the Rush Limbaugh show. How many of your clients have pets? Maybe you would do well by switching your advertising to animal shows or help save wildlife in Yellowstone. eHarmony is not about entertainment or acting irresponsibly. It is about changing and helping lives and looking for the best in each other.

I had to scroll through multiple pages to get to where one can actually leave a comment, however.

108. Excellent! Thank you UPS!
Moderates in both the major parties are getting tired of all the Prez bashing. I hope everybody will let their local conservative hate radio/TV shows know that "criticizing the president, at a time like THIS..." may be fine from a free speech standpoint, but it's excessive and is making the hosts sound unpatriotic. I'm not saying don't do it, just quit making a damn career of it.

I made the mistake of talking to a producer of one of my local hate radio shows to suggest to him that the show sounded unpatriotic and he started ranting about free speech and said their ratings were at their highest point ever. I guess calling the advertisers would be a good strategy at that point.

His rant and complete disregard for considering my point of view writ large for me that conservative radio/TV is all about convincing the little people to believe what is in their bosses' best interests. Conservative radio/TV is like a megaphone for the Monopoly banker guy, wrapping up what's good for the corporate elite in populist giftwrap. Yeah, the gift that keeps the little folks giving-- giving their rights to unionize, giving their rights to a fair tax system, to affordable health care, etc. etc.

They are a great organization and the only reason I left is that I graduated from nursing school. The centers I worked in were fair to the union and tried to get stuff done right.

Now if we can start working on Limbaugh's radio stations (and the local sponsors that
take ad time during his show). Note: he has few national sponsors, and those are worth
working on but also he 'barters' the rest of his commercial availabilities, and so
this can include local sponsors, which is why local efforts are needed, but also
an effort can be mounted nationally to contact his STATIONS directly as well.

Good job!!!

127. CBC: Please send us Heather Mallick NOW!

Bill-o HATES Heather Mallick, who is not only female and Canadian, but an admitted Socialist.

If the name sounds familiar, it's probably because of Mallick's pre-election column about how Sarah Palin "appeals to 'the white trash vote' with her 'toned-down version of the porn actress look.'"

The whole story is here, including the death threats from the usual Faux-News mob: http://unrepentantoldhippie.blogspot.com/2008/09/hurric...

Mallick's one appearance (AFAIK) on Faux News came in 2004 and she wrote a hilarious column about it:

Mr. O'Reilly is not a smart man. He's like one of those old guys you see on the street ringing a bell and shouting about eternal damnation...

I said the United States couldn't boycott Canadian goods because it would be mutually damaging. "We're your biggest trading partner."

"No, you're not." (We are.) Naturally, I wanted to reply, "Yes, we are," so that he could say "No, we're not," and then I'd say, "Everything you say bounces off me and reflects back on you, so there," but I couldn't regress that far...

And then he asked me if I was a socialist, and I said, "Certainly," and it was as if I'd said I like donkey semen in my latte instead of milk.

as far as I know they have never advertised with O'Reilly, so as far as I'm concerned that makes them better than UPS. You can't tell me that UPS didn't know exactly what O'Reilly was like when they first purchased ad time on his show.

133. We can make Billo and Rush....
.... victims of their own glorious 'free market' if we all do this.

Get writing today! (I just did).

135. In no way does the statement say what Think Progress says it says.
Edited on Sat Mar-28-09 01:15 PM by BuyingThyme
All the UPS email says is that UPS has no plans to advertise on the O'Reilly show.

Shame on Think Progress for being so dishonest or so stupid.

142. I think it does...
UPS will now choose not to advertise on O'liely, maybe they were considering it, do you know they weren't?

Is there any harm in exhausting all of our efforts to get this Bigot off the air completely?

145. I don't think we need to lie to make our point.
And by putting their fake story under the header "Media Accountability," Think Progress is making a collective ass of itself.

140. Go Brown!
The drivers are union folk, and now the company has stopped supporting O'Liely. Just makes my opinion of the company go up.
