APBomb kills 4 US soldiers in Afghanistan's east

Mar 15th, 2009 | KABUL -- Hundreds of U.S. soldiers recently deployed near the Afghan-Pakistan border have seen clashes and attacks double in early 2009 compared with 2008, U.S. officials said. Underscoring the danger, a roadside bomb Sunday in the same region killed four U.S. troops.
The spike in violence along the border is a first indication that roadside bombs and other ambushes are likely to surge as thousands of new U.S. forces arrive in Afghanistan this year.
Brig. Gen. Richard Blanchette, a spokesman for the NATO-led force here, confirmed that a roadside bomb killed four U.S. troops in eastern Afghanistan. A U.S. statement indicated the troops were based in Jalalabad.
