U.S. choice for top intelligence analyst withdraws
Tue Mar 10, 2009 4:56pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The candidate for a top U.S. intelligence post withdrew from the running on Tuesday after angering some in Congress with remarks on Israeli "oppression" of Palestinians, and about China.

The office of Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair said in a statement that Charles Freeman, who had been picked to head the National Intelligence Council, had asked not to proceed.

Blair had accepted Freeman's decision with regret, the statement said.

4. Exactly! Well and truly stated!
Disclaimer - I am NOT anti-Semitic, but I am damn sure anti-radical Zionist, and that includes
Likud, Beyamin N. and that Lieberman character in Israel.

14. Rep. Steve Israel
Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., one of Freeman's chief critics, said Tuesday that Freeman's resignation "preserved the impartiality of U.S. intelligence."

2. Chas Freeman withdraws
Source: MSNBC

The Washington Post and other news outlets have reported on the controversial appointment of Charles W. Freeman to lead the National Intelligence Council. The controversy -- he has occasionally criticized Israel's policies.

Per the Post: "Since 1997, he has presided over the Middle East Policy Council, a Washington-based nonprofit organization that is funded in part by Saudi money. In that role, Freeman has occasionally criticized the Israeli government's positions and U.S. support for those policies. In 2007, for example, he said, 'The brutal oppression of the Palestinians by the Israeli occupation shows no sign of ending,' adding, 'American identification with Israel has become total.'"

More: "Opposition to Freeman's appointment has been led by several pro-Israel groups and advocates in the United States, joined by some members of Congress."

Well, Freeman withdrew from consideration today. According to a statement from the DNI's office, "Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair announced today that Ambassador Charles W. Freeman Jr. has requested that his selection to be Chairman of the National Intelligence Council not proceed. Director Blair accepted Ambassador Freeman's decision with regret."

Why isn't this an active thread in GD also? Do the mods not feel the message its important enough for general consumption and have relegated it to obscurity in LBN?

7. Suckola.

Chas Freeman pulls his appointment.

A new statement from Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blairs office:

"Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair announced today that Ambassador Charles W. Freeman Jr. has requested that his selection to be Chairman of the National Intelligence Council not proceed. Director Blair accepted Ambassador Freemans decision with regret."

Freemans appointment was met by strong right-wing outrage, provoking a fierce behind-the-scenes lobbying campaign to torpedo the appointment. The Wonk Rooms Matt Duss noted that Freeman voiced some inconvenient truths about the Israel-Palestine conflict, and represent a challenge to the treasured neoconservative myth that US and Israeli interests are identical. Today, Blair defended Freemans appointment under questioning from Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT).

UpdateStatement from Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY): "Charles Freeman was the wrong guy for this position. His statements against Israel were way over the top and severely out of step with the administration. I repeatedly urged the White House to reject him, and I am glad they did the right thing." ... http://thinkprogress.org/2009/03/10/freeman-out /

10. "Chuck Schumer is the wrong guy for his position. His statements supporting
a right-wing arms marketing cabal against the interests of New Yorkers, Americans and Israelis are way over the top and severely out of step with those of his employers, the people of New York. I have repeatedly urged those voters to reject him, and I will be very glad when they do just that in his upcoming primary battle in New York."

16. The Israel Lobby is a threat to American interests and security
There is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired, still less to factor in American understanding of trends and events in the Middle East. The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency and include character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth. The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors.

There is a special irony in having been accused of improper regard for the opinions of foreign governments and societies by a group so clearly intent on enforcing adherence to the policies of a foreign government - in this case, the government of Israel. I believe that the inability of the American public to discuss, or the government to consider, any option for US policies in the Middle East opposed by the ruling faction in Israeli politics has allowed that faction to adopt and sustain policies that ultimately threaten the existence of the state of Israel. It is not permitted for anyone in the United States to say so. This is not just a tragedy for Israelis and their neighbors in the Middle East; it is doing widening damage to the national security of the United States.

The outrageous agitation that followed the leak of my pending appointment will be seen by many to raise serious questions about whether the Obama administration will be able to make its own decisions about the Middle East and related issues. I regret that my willingness to serve the new administration has ended by casting doubt on its ability to consider, let alone decide what policies might best serve the interests of the United States rather than those of a Lobby intent on enforcing the will and interests of a foreign government.
