Governor announces $10.7B plan for high-speed trains (NY)
Source: WSYR-TV

Albany (WSYR-TV) - Traveling by train fell the wayside in the mid-1900's thanks to automobiles and airplanes, but Gov. David Paterson governor wants that golden train age back.

Monday, the governor released New York's plan for seeking federal stimulus funds to help pay for high-speed rail service across upstate New York to Manhattan.

The first statewide rail plan in 22-years calls for $10.7 billion in improvements to the state's rail system over the next two decades.

The governor is proposing adding a third east-west track for a high-speed train that would run from Albany to Niagara Falls, with stops in Utica, Syracuse and Rochester. That would cut travel time down by two hours or more.

1. Good for New York
Now let's see other states do the same--a combination of state and federal monies will make this happen.

5. I hate to be a nudge, but putting on a few more regular speed trains on the
current lines (Hudson River line, Connecticut lines, Long Island lines, Amtrak north to Montreal) would also be quite nice, less expensive and would have more immediate effect.

10. Yeah I'm sure that Albany to Rochester route will be full....
Cheaper to hire a minivan to transport the people that want to go that route everyday.

High speed rail lines need to focus on cities that people actual travel between.

20. All the more reason to build this
So those areas north of NYC can grow. If NY state becomes a state networked via high speed rail, it will change many things including commute times. It can also make the exurbs more attractive to live in. You could live above Westchester or Orange counties and commute to NYC for work. Now that would be something very nice. Same would be able to be said for outlying areas around Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester as well.

It's a great idea.

7. Those trains are gonna look awesome all spray-painted up with gang symbols!
And with the NY MTA's reputation for quality maintenance and service, I'm sure it'll be the safest and most reliable hi-speed rail system in the world. Eat your heart out, Shinkansen ... NY's gettin' in the game!

:sarcasm: off.

12. And the North-South track high-speed?
My idea would be to have a high-speed network from Boston to Washington. DC. . .

starting at Logan airport,stopping at:
South Station Boston
Providence or Green airport (Warwick, RI)
JFK airport by building a direct rail connection, forget bus link!
Grand Central, NYC
Philadelphia
Washington, DC Union Station
ending at Dulles airport.

Connecting airport passengers as well as commuters would really make good sense and stimulate all kinds of industry.

Course, that takes REGIONAL PLANNING of the 21st century kind. Ya know, what the Europeans and Japanese have been doing since last century.

Listening Team Obama?

17. You're right to correct me. . .
. . .ideally every state up and down the east coast could be part of an EastCoastExpress that ties in their major airport somehow.

And, then there could be the WestCoastExpress. . .SouthernTransExpress. . .the NorthernTransExpress. . .get all contiguous states physically connected like a network grid.

And as for Alaska and Hawaii, I'm working on some ideas. . .for now Alaska could be part of a Canadian-US express train and Hawaii could be reached by dual train-plane package plan. . .

Where there's a will, there's a TRAIN way!

14. Cripe its about time.,I've been waitng for yrs. hopefully its not more BS.
The NYS Thruway provided the clear path of travel throughout NY state, that is why it was built along the Erie Canal path, the rail link should too. IT 20yrs too late but in the long run it will reduce energy consumption while allowing travel throughout the vast expanse of the state. A lots of the planning is already done including a link across the Hudson at Tapan Zee.
