Pakistan Agrees to Enforce Islamic Law in Violent Region
Source: NY TIMES

ESHAWAR, Pakistan — Pakistan government officials said they struck a deal on Monday to accept a legal system compatible with Shariah law in the violent Swat region in return for peace.

The agreement contradicted American demands for the Pakistan authorities to fight harder against militants, and seemed certain to raise fears in Washington that a perilous precedent had been set across a volatile region where U.S. forces are fighting Taliban militants operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Shariah Zone: One Solution for Pakistan?

The civil war underway in the tribal areas and a large part of the Frontier province, including Swat, presents the biggest challenge Pakistan has ever faced. At stake is not only the integrity of the state but also the nature of its polity. The odds are heavily stacked against Pakistan’s survival as a democracy.

5. While we were sleeping(and celebrating).
There bad signs on the international horizon: 1. The above mentioned development ,ever so slightly Pakistan is pulling away from us and our fight with the Taliban, just as Obama is planning on major troop additions.2. Netanyahu will most likely be the Prime Minister of Israel, this is not good news for the peace process. He has no intention of giving up one inch of land in the land for peace formula. All sides in the middle east are hardening their positions and will be more than a match for Obama,Hillary and George Mitchell.3.In the last 24 hours Israel has decided to annex more West Bank land to build settlements on,while we talk, think and plan the Israelis catch us with our pajamas on and establish "facts on the ground".
