Twin Suicide bombings injure 30 in Iraq
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/02/18/sprj.nirq.main/index.html

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Twin suicide car bomb attacks Wednesday on a coalition base south of Baghdad wounded at least 30 people, many believed to be coalition forces, a Filipino commander told CNN. At least two suicide bombers driving the cars died.

The attacks were staged at 7:20 a.m. (11:20 a.m. ET) when a car bomb exploded at the gate to Camp Charlie -- a multinational coalition base in Hilla. A second vehicle tried to clear the checkpoint to the camp but also detonated at the front gate.

In an attempt to quell the violence, the U.S.-led coalition said Tuesday it is increasing the rewards it offers for the capture of the insurgents attacking coalition soldiers, Iraqi security personnel and civilians who work with the coalition.

Another day in Hell.

2. Guards Thwart Attack on Base in Iraq: AP Headline....
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&e=4&u=/ap/20040218/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

<snip>BAGHDAD, Iraq - Troops opened fire Wednesday on two explosives-laden trucks that tried to enter a Polish camp south of Baghdad, triggering blasts that killed two Iraqis and wounded 17 soldiers, including six Poles, 10 Hungarians and an American.

The attack came as members of Iraq (news - web sites)'s Governing Council continued to push aside the U.S. idea of holding regional caucuses to elect an interim government after the planned June 30 hand over.

The bombing happened after 7 a.m. local time when a pair of trucks loaded with explosives tried to drive near the front of Camp Charlie in Hillah. Guards fired at the vehicles, causing one to explode, killing the driver, said Lt. Col. Robert Strzelecki. Another truck struck a concrete barrier and exploded, damaging a nearby house.

Hungarian Defense Ministry Spokesman Istvan Bocskai said two of the 10 Hungarian soldiers were seriously wounded, but the injuries weren't life threatening.
