Kay Yow, Basketball Coach, Dies at 66
Source: NYT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina State's Kay Yow, the Hall of Fame women's basketball coach who won more than 700 games while earning fans with her decades-long fight against breast cancer, died on Saturday. She was 66.

Yow, first diagnosed with the disease in 1987, died Saturday morning at WakeMed Cary Hospital after being admitted there last week, university spokeswoman Annabelle Myers said.

Yow won more than 700 games in a career filled with milestones. She coached the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1988, won four Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championships, earned 20 NCAA tournament bids and reached the Final Four in 1998.

She also was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2002, while the school dedicated ''Kay Yow Court'' in Reynolds Coliseum in 2007.

2. ESPN just did a piece about her.
As a long time Lady Vols fan - it brought tears to my eyes because I knew who Kay Yow was, and I had been following her story for years.

Pat Summit and Vivian Stringer are saddened just like I am.

8. I saw Vivian Stringer pulled - kicking and screaming - from an argument with a referee...
by a player that just walked up behind her and kind of wrapped an arm around her neck and shoulders and dragged her backwards.

Probably the funniest thing I've seen on a court. Good coach, though.

4. That 1988 women's Olympic team was FOCUSED due to her.
I remembered seeing photos of the players wearing T-shirts with their motto:
"SOLE GOAL - SEOUL GOLD"

And one of the players on that team, Anne Donovan, coached the US women's team to the gold last summer.

Rest in Peace, Coach. You were one of the best for all time.

7. At ODU we had a world of respect for her as a person and a coach.
Here's hoping you get nothin' but net on the other side, Kay.

Tell Jimmy 'Hello'.
