In a related article (linked below)

Columbus, Ohio - Oil tumbled below $44 a barrel Thursday and AVERAGE gasoline prices slipped under $1.80 a gallon, both four year lows. The unprecedented decline in energy prices has provided some relief to consumers and businesses, but it has occurred because of the nation's deepening recession: Fewer people have jobs to drive to. Gasoline futures for January delivery closed below a dollar, with optimism about the nation's economic health in serious decline.

It was the first close below $1 since 2006, when gasoline began trading in the current format. When gasoline included the additive MTBE, it last crossed the $1 barrier in February 2004.

The red state discount has gotten bigger since there are fewer red states than there used to be.
Now we blue states pay almost double.

34. if you did a contract with your oil company
you'll probably still end up paying the higher price. You should give them a call :hi: I don't heat with oil, my whole house is on gas, but I have a price cap. So I don't pay more than 2.85, but if it goes down I get the lower price.

12. So is this good or bad for the economy -?

Seems to me it could answer the short-term issues with production costs, home heating, industrial shipping costs, travel, etc... and could even help the big 3 unload some gas guzzlers ahead of getting into a green mindset.

Time to get into the home-gas-tank business to store some of that cheap gasoleeeen!

31. Sadly, gas price is not something that defines economy.
Gas prices react to economy. Its more like supply and demand thing. As economic activity slows down, juice needed to "oil" it is needed less. And thus, scarcity turns to abundance.

So much for the credibility of the financier of the SwiftBoat Liars. He may have some good wind production ideas, but most of his wind is just a bunch of hot air. The good news is he has taken a financial bath in this stock market crash and I haven't been seeing his commercials anymore either.

25. not surprising considering the economy in Mississippi . . .
One of the lowest states in wages too so I can see it being the lowest in gasoline costs. I am in southern Illinois, gas is $1.55 here which shouldn't be that high but we have a higher gas tax in Illinois which keeps our overall fuel prices higher. The unemployment in my county is now at 10 percent and expected to rise. My husband lost his job in October, I lost mine a couple of weeks ago. I had just gone back to work so I don't qualify for unemployment and my hubby has been "underemployed" for over a year which means he has taken anything, contract work, wal-mart, sales, etc., to help keep food on the table but the low wages means unemployment will be very low. Still, something is better than nothing so he applied for the new extension last week and can start filing Sunday. As for gas, we can't afford to go anywhere or buy anything anyway so the lower prices don't help us much anyway. I think a lot of us are in this situation. Kind of ironic that gas is reasonable in price again and we can't afford to go anywhere due to no jobs.

30. Depends on when they bought the gas probably.
They base their gas prices mostly on what it costs them to buy it + some margin. It's been dropping so quickly that seeing drastically different prices isn't uncommon until it settles down a bit.

35. If you watched the movie
"The Quick and the Dead" you understand why economic problems occured before the election. It is stated clearly by Gene Hackman(actor) playing the self proclaimed town owner. You have enough money to hire a gun, you need to have your money taken away.

Luckily providence prevailed, and the story told in that film did not come about. Or to put it more poetically bullets don't work.

..., after seeing a bumper sticker that said "GAS WAS $1.46 WHEN BUSH TOOK OFFICE", that they're probably manipulating the price for his 'legacy'. He'll be able to say that he kept the price down, not mentioning in the history books that it hit almost $5.00 a gallon because of the idiot.

Not only this but the inevitable price rise (probably as sharp and

What is likely to happen in the next few weeks is OPEC cutting production due to the very real reduced demand from the US and China.
