Georgia GOP expects runoff in Senate race

Chambliss holds slight lead over Martin, but neither has majority

By JIM THARPE, ERIC STIRGUS

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Tuesday, November 04, 2008

Georgia GOP Chairwoman Sue Everhart said Wednesday morning that she anticipated a runoff between Republican Saxby Chambliss and Democrat Jim Martin for the U.S. Senate seat in Georgia.

Neither candidate had 50 percent of the vote. Chambliss, the incumbent, held a 49.9 percent to 46.7 percent advantage over Martin with 96 percent of the state precincts counted, according to the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office as of 9:45 a.m. Wednesday. Libertarian Allen Buckley had 3.4 percent of the vote.

If that scenario held, Chambliss would face a costly and unpredictable four-week runoff with Martin.

Everhart said she was up early Wednesday morning talking to party leaders on the plan to keep Chambliss in the U.S. Senate.

and now I'm sobbing.

We might not have turned for Pres, but it was damn close....and all of the work we did was so worth it since it made this run off happen.

If we can get rid of that asshat CRUEL horrible person, we have done amazing things here.

AND Obama will be here!!!!!

7. at least it won't be a race all about the filibuster
although if Franken pulls it out, we get Oregon (likely) and Alaska(you would fucking think) then maybe it will be all about the filibuster

8. Does anyone have an update on this part of the ajc article
from burythehatchet's link?

Election officials and reporters were trying to figure out on Wednesday how many votes remained to be counted.

There still were an undetermined number of votes to be counted — possibly tens of thousands of early and absentee ballots from Fulton, Cobb and Gwinnett counties.

11. My family down in GA have been calling to tell me that some pretty bad shenanigans
have been occurring in Fulton (Atlanta) and Dekalb (Decatur) counties. We need to be pouring money into GA. I want Saxby "Shitless" to go down in flames!!!

12. Obama will need to activate the turn-out-the-vote apparatus for this.
The Dems need the seat -- and Chambliss' win 6 years ago was so slimy.

13. I don't see Obama getting personally involved. He's looking ahead to his need for
building bi-partisanship. But yes, canning Laxby would be sweet.
