Hostage in Afghanistan worked for French aid group

PARIS: French aid group Solidarite Laique says a Frenchman kidnapped in Afghanistan was the head of its program there.

The man was snatched by armed gunmen in Kabul on Monday during his morning commute to work. An Afghan who tried to prevent the kidnapping was killed in the incident.

Solidarite Laique — Secular Solidarity in English — said in a statement that it is a not-for-profit group working to promote access to education and health care and on a variety of other issues. The name of the kidnapped man was not released,

The statement did not provide any other details about the group's employee and said it needed to keep public statements on the matter "as limited as possible."
