Top Ohio Court Throws Out Voter Registration Claim
Source: AP

POSTED: 8:33 pm EDT October 21, 2008
UPDATED: 8:52 pm EDT October 21, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit against the state's chief elections official over the handling of voter registration verifications after Republicans asked that it be tossed.

The move ends a court battle that had the potential to affect the ability of roughly 200,000 newly registered voters to cast a ballot in a crucial swing state. It had become a flash point for partisan accusations, with Democrats and voting rights groups accusing Republicans of trying to disenfranchise voters whose driver's license and Social Security numbers didn't match other government databases.

Republicans claimed Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat, was trying to cover up fraud.

Ohio GOP Chairman Bob Bennett said he asked that GOP fundraiser David Myhal, who filed the suit, withdraw his claims so that the parties can work toward a solution outside of court.

"We didn't file this lawsuit, but I've asked that it be withdrawn in the interest of negotiating a solution out of court," Bennett said in a statement. "The legal wrangling on this issue has gone on long enough."

8. OK... Time to recap here...
Ms Brunner,
1. You beat us in the highest Federal Court
2. You beat us in the highest State Court
3. Now it's time for us to sit down and negotiate how to allow us to disenfranchise at least some of your Dem votes.

Please Ms Brunner, do not ask Harry Reid for assistance on how to proceed! THANK YOU!

10. It's amazing how succinctly you surmise it.

I think that's exactly what's happening.
Why does the Repub party still have the leverage to negotiate?

I thought we rid the state of Blackwell politix.

11. He asks to negotiate AFTER the case ends? How... er big of him...
I was going to say 'white of him' but in this forum I am sure to get
viciously pummeled, or even worse, condescendingly tut-tut'ed.
Fine, do your worst!

There might possibly be an appeal left to the US Supreme Court,
(Bennett is too good a lawyer to want anyone to be drawing water from
that well again, if ya know what I mean, and you probably do). Its
a pretext for negotiation. Thinner reeds than this have averted nuclear
holocaust (ref:Missiles of October), so its something, not nothing...

Perhaps a counter-punch is coming and Bennett sees an opportunity
to get a rw-whacko out of the game so he can regain some control of the
legal ground (issues). Right now he's just a spectator.

Just some ideas, some what they are worth.
About 2 inflatocents, I figure, but every inflatocent counts these days!

13. I am not an expert....
Didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

But, I have noticed a pattern with repubs filing these frivolous suits. When they don't get the right judge, (a partisan to rule in their favor regardless of the law), or if they anticipate that they will be fought til the bitter end in a losing cause, they simply quietly withdraw the suit.

Then attempt to just take what they can get from a hopefully willing idiot that wants to display bi-partisanship.

I think they back off to prevent the court ruling from setting a precedent. That way they can come back with similar frivolous lawsuits again, and again, until they get the desired results.

Their supporters are stupid beyond compare, but no matter what you think about the repubs the guys that really calls the shots in the repub party, play politics like the masters play chess.

I have always said, that if they would ever begin to support policies that would benefit just a few more regular people, they could render the Democratic party obsolete for the foreseeable future.

16. Goopers withdrew the suit because they were going to lose. Sorry Goopers, when you withdraw the
lawsuit there is no need for the other side to negotiate. Go suck eggs.
