Australian Labor labelled 'anti-American' on trade | ABC (Australia)

Labor labelled 'anti-American' on trade

The Federal Government has accused the Opposition of anti-Americanism over its criticism of the US free trade deal.

The merits of the proposed agreement dominated the first Question Time of the year in federal Parliament today.

All but three of today's questions in the House of Representatives focused on the deal, with Labor's Craig Emerson demanding to know why it excludes sugar.

"Why has the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the National Party been un-Australian in accepting a deal without sugar?" he asked.

1. Lefties everywhere labelled 'anti-American'
Really, was 'anti-American' the best rebuttal they could come up with?

It seems that anytime anyone disagrees with selling off the entire world to the BFEE they are anti-American.

Australians wanting a good deal for Australians - anti-American
Americans wanting a good deal for Americans - anti-American
Iraqis wanting to survive the day.... oh well, you get where I'm going.

I wonder what the PM's handle is on freerepublic, he must have one, all his arguments fit the pattern really well.

3. Same thing in Canada...
a very small and highly manipulative group on the Right and in certain media circles like to float this anti-American crap...

What's the best strategy?

I am not sure...
But I know that polls in Oz as similar to Canada as far as 'liking Bush'...The Globe here did a poll and found nearly 85% wouldn't vote for the guy if he ran here...basically unanimous.

So that is one tactic...just let them talk.

People are not 'anti-American' and will see that a very small minority have shamelessly hitched their wagon to an extremist element of the GOP...even extreme by American standards and increasingly unpopular.

Sounds like Labour will be back downunder in short time

Where they belong...

7. ...and in Brazil too
we have our (thankfully few) Coulter wannabes. They love to shout "anti-American" on things they don't like. Oddly, I never heard one of them complain of something being "anti-Brazilian". Tells a lot, doesn't it?

What do you call someone who works for the interest of some foreign country and against his own?

The govt is planting questions left right and centre over the FTA including Foreign Security applications...

The NATs look very stressed through. The National Party Leader was called UnAustralian as he said that anybody would be for selling out on sugar.

Love it when sound bites bite back

6. Anti-American and Un-Australian?
Joe McCarthy is not only resurrected, he migrated to Australia and is lurking in John Howard's office.

I can't wait to kick them out.
