Space ‘smells like steak and metal
Source: Times Online

Outer space smells like hot metal, fried steak and the welding of a motorbike, scientists suggest. A chemist is recreating the smell to help Nasa to train its astronauts.

Nasa asked Steven Pearce, the managing director of Omega Ingredients, which makes fragrances, to recreate the scent after hearing of his work creating smells for an art exhibition in July, one of which was of the inside of the Mir space station. Mr Pearce is interviewing astronauts to help him with his task. “We have already produced the smell of fried steak, but hot metal is proving more difficult,” he said. “We think it’s a high-energy vibration in the molecule.”

1. We also think that if you can smell the outer space, you're doing it wrong.

2. Wow. If they can tackle this, they can move on to the McCain campaign
which, near as I can tell, smells like mothballs, mooseburgers and old white cheese.

3. "Old White Cheese" ...
... responsible for probably THE BEST blues LP of the mid 'sixties (produced at Electric Ladyland, if I'm not mistaken).

I never thought he'd come out for McCain, though.

Go figure ...

13. Right
Unless that's what it smells like in the station.
Although I suspect the tight confines of a space station might have rather a different aroma.

12. Reminds me of the story of the toddler found feeding Fruit Loops to a king cobra
The mystery is not in that it happened at all but how the hell it happened in the first place.

Don't you need to inhale something to smell it? How do you inhale without ... oh, never mind it's one
of those damned "what color is an orange in the dark" questions that ends up in science and makes my
brain barf.

talking about that after a space walk. they said when they get inside and take their suits off, the suits have this odd smell.

I think I saw it on TV in some kind of NASA or science channel show, some time back.

32. What's cooking in the center of the solar system would explain a little
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 07:34 PM by ohio2007
Outer space smells like hot metal, fried steak and the welding of a motorbike...

The image shows the corona for a moderately active Sun, with some (red) hot active regions in both hemispheres, surrounded by the (blue/green) cooler plasma of the quiet-Sun corona. Notice also the north polar-crown filament, the trans-equatorial loops, and the coronal hole in the south-east (lower-right) corner of the image and the smaller one over the north pole. This image shows the solar corona in a false-color, 3-layer composite: the blue, green, and red channels show the 171Å, 195Å, and 284Å wavelengths, respectively (most sensitive to emission from 1, 1.5, and 2 million degree gases). (TRACE Project, Stanford-Lockheed Institute for Space Research, NASA) #11

On September 30, 2001, TRACE observed an M1.0 flare in an active region very near to the solar limb. Fragments of a prominence hovered above the regions, with filamentary dark (relatively cool) material moving along the field lines, which then spread to form this dragon-like bright outline. (NASA/TRACE) #21
