Anxious Bush* Embarks on Charm Offensive
President appears on chatshow to boost sliding popularity as rumours grow of southern senator Edwards joining Kerry bandwagon

The White House yesterday tried to shore up George Bush's credibility with an election charm offensive, engineering the president's first appearance on a Sunday morning television chatshow to defend his war record - not only in Iraq but also during Vietnam.

Mr Bush's appearance on Meet the Press came as John Kerry, the Democratic frontrunner, was gaining favourable media attention following his runaway wins in the Michigan and Washington caucuses at the weekend.

On Saturday, the first lady, Laura Bush, granted a rare interview to the New York Times. Such outreach is unusual for a White House that has made little secret of its aversion to the press. Mr Bush has granted only a dozen press conferences while in office.

(snip)

A new Time magazine poll says 60% of Americans think Mr Kerry did his duty during the Vietnam war. In contrast, 39% say Mr Bush fulfilled his.

26. I felt rather sorry for him
I didn't know he had such a stuttering problem. He he.

He really didn't answer much of what Russert said. I was shocked Russert asked some of the pointed questions he did. I don't think he rebutted the pResident as much as he should have, but leaving Bush's ridiculous answers out there was almost as bad.

I remember this well from the summer of 2001. Remember how * "dazzled" Putin? And then September 11th.

in the gut...to demean Russert like that. Really puts him and his Sunday whore "Pundit Show" in perspective doesn't it? Quote:

11. Apparently around 40% of Americans are completely out of their trees!
40% think Kerry didn't do his duty in Vietnam (three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star).

39% think Bush* did (pulled strings to avoid combat service, wasted his training by being grounded, then went AWOL out of boredom? drug use? and became an alchoholic loser).

I can't believe that so many people can be so delusional. Surely most of these people must be able to think for themselves...Oh, wait...don't about 40% of Americans attend church regularly too? Never mind...

15. That's ok, I can live with 60-39 in Kerry's favor.
Particularly when you can figure that nearly all veterans are in the 60%. Bush is sagging bigtime among vets, particularly Vietnam vets. Kerry should get his fair share of the vet votes and active military votes this time - as opposed to 2000, when the shrub got way too many of them, given his sorry service record.

18. from people I talked too -- general consensus
about his MTP appearance --- questions were prepared/screened in advance, and bush* probably spent the week practicing the answers

conclusion -- the interview means nothing, puff-piece photo-op

a true leader is able to think on his/her feet and should be able to answer questions on issues where he/she is deeply involved -- after all eents/situations/problems don't sit around for a week or two waiting for a "Response clearance" from Rove

21. The Dems have knocked Bush*/Rove off their game
For months I've been reading about how Bush* isn't going to get involved in campaigning until after the Dem convention. Suddenly, the Bush*/Rove plan has changed, and it's obviously the result of Dems attacking him.

publicizing each change in Bush's bushshit and each lie Bush tells during this "charm offensive." Press the advantage and ridicule Bush for the liar he is.

36. They're on the defensive. Which is exactly where they should be.
Finally!

However the story about Bush's missing records ultimately turns out, the fact that he's defending himself *at all* speaks volumes. These people are past masters of "the best defense is a good offense." If they had something better to throw at Kerry and "the liberal media," believe me, they'd be doing it. He doesn't have a leg to stand on, and at some level they know it. It is beautiful.

will come looking like Pat Boone (and that's the girls) and cheer for Johnny Crisco and his funny looking friend.

He wants to show donors that he is fighting for Missouri.
Though if he really wanted to win MO, he would be pressing the flesh in St. Louis and KC. Though he would be hooted out of Columbia, if he tried.

27. Some of his previous attempts have not been successful...
From June 14, 2001:

Mr Bush travels to Gothenburg today for a summit with leaders of the European Union, many of whom were at the Nato gathering, to continue his charm offensive. But he may face more hostility on disputes over the environment and trade.

At the conference table, there were, inevitably, some of Mr Bush's famed slip-ups. He called the Nato secretary general, Lord Robertson, "Lord Robinson". Mr Blair nevertheless found Mr Bush to have been "articulate".

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2001/06/14/wsum114.xml

I can't believe the Media Whores think this turd is "charming." And where does Blair get off describing Bush as "articulate?"

31. so can we not "shelter" poor little Laura anymore now?
Can we stop putting down Du'ers who have seen her role from the beginning as a shill for George? Is it OK to criticize Laura Bush now? Suppose the two brats decide to enter the campaign and shill for their Dad. ARe they fair game or do we have to enable them also in order to appear to be in good standing with those who would protect Laura and the two brats?
