McCain to skip real red Texas

12:00 AM CDT on Monday, October 6, 2008

By GROMER JEFFERS JR. / The Dallas Morning News

John McCain doesn't plan on spending a cent to carry Texas: No offices, no staffers, no television commercials and no campaign appearances.

"Senator McCain is going to win Texas," said former Secretary of State Roger Williams, chairman of the statewide coordinated campaign effort led by the Texas Republican Party. "I can see why he isn't spending any time" in the state.

But for states not in the heat of the presidential fight, seeing the candidates at the top of the ticket offers more than just a glimpse at history. It helps down-ballot candidates and energizes party activists in the party.

So while Mr. McCain's absence signals that Texas is solidly red, it leaves local, more vulnerable GOP candidates to grind alone. He'd be the first GOP presidential candidate in years not to campaign here in the general election.

1. lol McCain, you're supposed to break your promises AFTER the election
"I don't believe it's fair or appropriate to come here and ask for your money and then not campaign here," he said after promising to make regular visits to Texas. "I'll be back to the great state of Texas on several occasions. Not just for fundraising, but because I think it is an important state for the future of this nation."

Since his remarks, Mr. McCain has not been back to the state, nor have many of his surrogates. And he's had to reconsider his efforts in other states as well. Last week, the campaign said it was pulling up stakes in Michigan, conceding the state to Mr. Obama.

3. Selfish "down-ballot" Texans -- nominate an old man for their ticket, then disturb his naps. . .
by wanting him to go places he sees no reason to visit, to speak with people he sees no value in helping, all so they -- "down-ballot" orphans, as it were -- all so they can get elected.

Always about them. When will they think of John McCain's needs -- a nap, dinner at 4:30, and beddy-bye before the little one's are put down. Guess they should have thought their ticket through a bit better.

4. He's vulnerable in Texas
Polling data indicates his support is soft and weakening. Might be worth hitting him there.

And as Howard Dean said, it is a sign of respect to ask someone for their vote, even if you don't expect to get it. Respect of that sort is valuable when one actually has to govern. Time to spread some good will in Texas, methinks.

7. I want to see Obama in Arizona!
I live here and I'm just dying for him to make an appearence here. I have yet to see him here. I know this is the state that elected McCain but his opponents aren't as strong as Obama. Many working class people are displeased by Bush and don't have a favorably opinion of him, the ones that are his supporters are sheep and have no clue what's going on in daily events and don't know much of anything about Obama. But Bush hasn't overwhemingly won here, Clinton carried us in '96, we have a democrat governor plus half of our congressmen are democrats including Harry Mitchell in heavily repub, morman district. Obama could turn this state in toss up if he was here more often.

10. Shit, how many is he going to "skip?"
He might as well pack his bags and go on home now if he keeps skipping all the states.

14. He pulls out of Michigan
because he's behind in the polls. He's not campaigning in Texas because he's sure to win it. Sounds like he can just pack up and go home.

This is one Texan who's not sorry to see him go!!

15. Could be an opportunity for Obama. But McCain really has no choice.
If he has to fight for Texas, he has lost the election anyway. So it makes sense. It would be like Obama spending valuable resources in Illinois. It does not make any sense.
