'Steve Fossett items' possibly found in California: police
Source: afp

Items possibly belonging to missing aviator Steve Fossett have been found by hikers in a remote area of California more than one year after his mysterious disappearance, police said Wednesday.

"They found some miscellaneous ID and actually some cash in the area, and the ID has the name of Steve Fossett on it," Schienle told CNN.

"We're not certain that it belongs to Steve Fossett but it certainly has his name on the ID which are some miscellaneous pilots and/or aircraft licenses."

The identity cards did not have a photograph of Fossett on them and no plane wreckage was found near the items, Schienle said.

3. Yikes! I hadn't thought of that
But skeletal remains? I almost wish he was on an island somewhere, and that the whole "death" thing was a hoax, but that would be too cruel for his family and those who love/d him.

wind, scattered by time. The plane could be a mile away, or further. It's a mystery, for sure.

on edit - I mean that the body and/or items on the body could have been moved by animals/wind, etc. from the area of the crash, not the plane itself.

5. $1.6 million for search
SAN FRANCISCO, June 26 (Reuters) - The cost of searching for missing adventurer Steve Fossett -- estimated at $1.6 million -- has strained the Nevada National Guard's training budget as one of its units prepares to deploy overseas, according to a state audit.

6. Yikes! You would think that his estate would pay for some/all
of that.

My DH thinks this is a bit fishy. He thought, initially, that Fossett's wife was WAY too anxious to have him declared dead.

12. it wasn't her money... it was my state's money
and guv kept search on for the all time record amount of time. We have an enormous deficit and idiot guv spends 1.6 million of record search for a guy who didn't bother to file a flight plan taking off from Baron Hilton's ranch for gawd's sake. Talk about bailouts!

13. no, i'm talking about after the Govt search was over
she has a lot of her own money but her and the rest of the family ddin't seem to do anything on their own to find out more. i think many others who had that type of money would have done something.

and yeah, the state should never have spend more money and time than they would for others.
