Prosecutor appointed to probe attorney firings

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General Michael Mukasey on Monday appointed a prosecutor to examine potential criminal charges in the Justice Department's firings of nine federal prosecutors, which it said bore substantial signs of improper political considerations.

The appointment of Nora Dannehy, a federal prosecutor in Connecticut, came as the department released an inspector general's report that found former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales had "abdicated" his responsibility in the matter.

The report also said several White House officials, including former top political aide Karl Rove, were unwilling to be interviewed by investigators about the 2006 firings.

3. Guys, this is huge.
I know it is low background noise within the financial mess, but Vanity Fair recently had an article on Mukasey. He has promised some repuke bigwigs that he would NOT appoint a prosecutor in this stuff and had been sticking to that scabrous promise. For him to reverse himself now is pretty clear evidence that this is so big and so pervasive that he could no longer hold himself to that promise and his hand was forced.

This means, I think, that the odds of some people facing significant jail time arew very, very good.

5. I agree with you.
This won't be buried once the indictments start coming down.

Prosecutor named to probe US attorneys' firings

By LAURIE KELLMAN and MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 38 minutes ago

Attorney General Michael Mukasey named a prosecutor Monday to investigate whether former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, other Bush administration officials or Republicans in Congress should face criminal charges in the firings of nine U.S. attorneys.

The launching of a criminal inquiry follows the recommendation of internal Justice Department investigators who concluded that, despite denials of the administration, political considerations played a part in the firings of at least four of the federal prosecutors.

In their 358-page report, investigators said the lack of cooperation by senior officials at the White House and in the Justice Department left gaps in their findings that should be investigated further.

"Serious allegations involving potential criminal conduct have not been fully investigated or resolved," the report said, listing lying to investigators, obstruction of justice and wire fraud among the potential felony crimes.
