Russia orders upgrade of its nuclear deterrent
Source: Reuters

DONGUZ TESTING RANGE, Russia (Reuters) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday announced plans to create an upgraded nuclear deterrence system for Russia by 2020, including a space defense system and new nuclear submarines.

He said the need for the upgrade was demonstrated by the conflict with neighboring Georgia last month, when Russia launched a massive counter-offensive to crush an attempt by Georgian forces to retake the rebel South Ossetia region.

"A guaranteed nuclear deterrent system for various military and political circumstances must be provided by 2020," Medvedev told Russian military chiefs after a military exercise in the southern Urals region of Orenburg.

"Large-scale construction of new types of warships is planned, primarily of nuclear submarines armed with cruise missiles, and multi-purpose submarines. A system of air and space defense will be created," said Medvedev.

3. Unfortunately, such measures are required.
"Peace through strength." It's all about what your objectives are. Russia is interested in peace and stability.

6. I think so.
Russia cannot leave itself vulnerable to an angry, dying, violence prone imperial behemoth, looking to save itself through militarism.

4. Let's think about this for a second...
We basically ended the Cold War by out spending them to the point that they just couldn't afford to keep up anymore. Wonder how that's going to play out this time? Something tells me the shoe is on the other foot this time around.

7. What is going on now...
... between the United States and Russia (the creation of bigger and better bombs) sounds straight out of the movie Dr. Strangelove. I remember when Stranglove is talking to the Svoiet ambassador he said "The Whole point of the Doomsday Machine is lost if you keep it a secret, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL THE WORLD."

9. Russia refuses to allow NATO inspectors at its missile bases (but its observers to remain
MOSCOW, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will not allow Czech and Polish inspectors at its missile bases but is ready for further talks on the presence of its observers at U.S. missile shield sites in central Europe, the Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

Foreign media reported last week that both the Czech Republic and Poland oppose a permanent Russian presence at planned U.S. missile defense facilities on their territories claiming that the permission could be granted only on the basis of reciprocity.
