Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home

ANCHORAGE, Sept. 8 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.

Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post.

The governor's daughters and husband charged the state $43,490 to travel and many of the trips were to and from their house in Wasilla and Juneau, the capital city 600 miles away, the documents show.

I remember some Councilmen had to spend a few days in jail for this type of behavior

What is the excuse this time God sent her and her family on free trips?

She sounds awfully like the lobbyist Abramoff

10. So in the fisrt 19 months that's about 54% of the time
at home "travelling on official business" and charging nearly 14% extra over her salary for it.

Plus the travel allowances for herself and the first dude and even the kids doing "State Business".

Amazing. The fact that Murkowski, who unfortunately is moose hunting and could not be reached to comment, was worse doesn't really make her case any better, does it?

Once a fraud always a fraud. :freak:

16. Why wouldn't her family just move to Juneau?
I don't get it at all. Seems that a mother of five young children, one child with special needs and one with an unplanned pregnancy, would want them to live in the city she works at.

Especially considering that she was pregnant and could have used the family support at the time.

I don't know, just seems that most moms would want their large family of young children and infants to actually live with her. Special needs children need all the love and support they can get from both parents. I know that first hand since I'm a father of one myself and take care of him 24 hours a day seven days a week by myself. He's going on thirty. Special needs kids often need parents helps for as long as they live or the parents die. Unless your a parent with no soul or compassion who just discards your kid because it's to hard to handle. I consider a parent who farms out all the care of their special needs kid to be uncaring. Being a parent means more that holding a child for a few minutes a day and kissing him on the forehead before bed. It means bathing him and feeding him. It means dressing him and brushing his teeth. It's a never ending job and one that only a parent can do for their special needs child.

So why spend the states 60 grand for travel expenses to keep your young and needing family in Wasilla? Makes no sense. The Governors house is plenty big for that family to live there full time. Just seems that if you want to be governor of a state and have a large family of five kids you would all agree beforehand that to keep the family together you would all live in the capital city. From what I hear the "first dude" kept his jobs also. So what type of parents would farm out the child care of five children and infants to parents and friends? That's just plain negligence. You don't become parents of five children unless you realize you have to give them your time. Children aren't furniture. Palins children deserve better than they got.

19. Welcome to DU and that is a very good question
:hi:

Vermont is the only state without a governor's mansion which has limited electees to those within driving distance of Mt. Pelier

That being said moving to the state capital is pretty much understood unless you are willing to do a lot of commuting....like Biden.

25. What's the tax rule on that "per diem"?
I used to make about 200.00 a month in re-imbursed mileage, all legal and tax free,
traveling for my job.
'Course, I was legitimately traveling.
Dunno what her tax rules are.
