Rice Laments Lack of Black Diplomats
Source: ABC News

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today lamented the dearth of blacks serving as diplomats in the Foreign Service.

"I want to see a Foreign Service that looks as if black Americans are a part of this great country," Rice told an assembly of professors and administrators during her keynote address to the Annual Conference of the White House Initiative on National Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Washington. "I have lamented that I can go into a meeting at the Department of State and, as a matter of fact, I can go into a whole day of meetings at the Department of State and actually rarely see somebody who looks like me. And that's just not acceptable."

Rice follows Colin Powell, her predecessor, as the only blacks to serve as America's top diplomat.

Condi dear, did you and Colin ever notice you're in the wrong party to see a lot of black people?

2. Well, if you screen State Department employees for Republican ideology
you are going to wind up with very few black state department employees. Or sentient state department employees, for that matter.

Though, cudos to Rice for speaking about this.

4. better than never realizing it at all.
And some issues transcend political bias. Like the elimination of racial bias. And while the two are entertwined, they are not identical. If Rice can use whatever influence she has to make the world a little better, kudos for it. Not for anything else she has done, just for that.

5. Eight years of being the only black face in the room
Wow, she's lightning quick, isn't she?

I'm guessing that like Stephen Colbert, Dr. Rice doesn't see color, and someone just informed her that all the other people in the room are white and she's black. Must have come as a real shock, I'm sure.

7. She had eight freakin years to say this--why wait until when she is being
ushered out the back door? And what did she do for the last eight, hell even for the last year to change the climate or appearance at State? Nada, nothing, blip! The good news is she will be gone in six months. The bad news is she has six years to start World War III.

9. I'm confused.
Doesn't the State Department hire diplomats?
And if so, wouldn't Ms. Rice be in a position to make hiring decisions?

I tried to google this info, but wasn't able to come up with a good enough answer.
Can anyone help me out?

12. Looks like me
If she wants to see someone who looks like herself, I think she is going to have to visit Mr. Dorian Gray and look in his attic.

13. Funny..
Did she speak to this within the 8 years of her being in the republican party. Did she speak out anytime before? Did she say anything to chimp when she had his ear? Maybe I missed something

14. this is a little disingenuous
Condi, you were the head of the State Department. You could have enforced EEOC, mandated hiring practices that emphasized diversity, increased recruiting at colleges... What were you thinking when you were head of the State Department?
