Kennedy plans to address DNC
Posted by James F. Smith August 24, 2008 07:46 PM

By Scot Lehigh, Globe Columnist, and Susan Milligan, Globe Staff

In a development that is sure to bring the house down, US Senator Edward M. Kennedy is expected to attend the Democratic National Convention, most likely to deliver a speech tomorrow night.

Kennedy is battling brain cancer, and his doctors are said to be worried that his treatment has compromised his immune system and that attending the convention could put him at further risk. Still, the senator has recently told people that he has a speech written for the convention and that he badly wants to come, pending a final medical consultation.

Buzz has built among Massachusetts politicos that Kennedy would come, and today a source close to the family confirmed that he had made a decision to come.

``He is definitely planning to be here,'' said the Kennedy family confidant. ``The whole Kennedy family will be in a special section. It should be quite moment.''

3. Tomorrow night? OMG.
What a decent, decent, good and decent man. I wish they would let Barack and Joe on the floor to watch -- I know that they usually keep them sequestered until their big night, but this is history and I'd like to see the entire crew present.

I am verklempt. Hopeful and scared and angry and pessimistic and optimistic and confused.

And proud.

Thank you Senator Kennedy. Thank you! :patriot:

11. He is a champion.
Under going cancer treatment is one of the most- if not the most- stressful and grueling thing a body can be put through. Hopefully he will be able to make it.

He was one of the first to openly edorse Senator Obama and he deserves a special place at the convention.

Senator Kennedy's Decades of Service to Party and Country to be Honored

The video features Senator and Mrs. Kennedy as well as conversations with Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and Georgia Congressman John Lewis. It also incorporates interviews with individuals who have worked closely with Senator Kennedy and whose lives he has touched, including:

* Brian Hart of Bedford, Massachusetts, who speaks of losing his son in Iraq in an attack on his unarmored humvee. Senator Kennedy and the Hart family have worked together to ensure that troops in Iraq and Afghanistan now have enough properly armored vehicles and body armor.
* Sixteen-year-old Lauren Stanford of Plymouth, Massachusetts, who suffers from juvenile diabetes. Senator Kennedy asked Lauren to testify in support of stem cell research before his health committee. Senator Kennedy and Ms. Stanford have continued to advocate for increased investments in medical research.
* Jasmine Harrison who met Senator Kennedy when he read to her each week for five years, beginning when Jasmine was in the second grade, at a public school in Washington, DC as part of the “Everybody Wins!” program. He continued to encourage her over the years and she enters college this fall with plans to major in education.
* Alan Khazei, Co-Founder of City Year, who speaks of Senator Kennedy’s work to create Americorps and commitment to inspiring all Americans to give back to their communities.

The video, produced by Burns and Herzog along with their colleagues Sarah Botstein and Christopher G. Cowen, will run approximately eight minutes.

15. how heavy are hearts are going to be...
one of the greatest fighters for the common man coming there to address our party's convention, for a candidate of mixed race - something that he's clearly worked hard to secure in the past 40 years - and he clearly so wants to do it! breathtaking!
