Wolfowitz: Iraq Attacks Show U.S. Efforts Succeeding
By Tabassum Zakaria
KIRKUK, Iraq (Reuters) -

Attacks in Iraq (news - web sites) like the Arbil suicide bombings show efforts to build a new Iraq are succeeding and that extremists are using violence to stop the process, U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said on Monday.

<snip>Sixty-seven people were killed in Sunday's coordinated bombings. <snip>

He predicted that these types of attacks would ultimately unite Iraqis against the violent extremists.

"September 11 had united Americans, and Bali united Indonesians and this terrible thing is going to unite Iraqis, It's not going to have the effect the terrorists seem to want," Wolfowitz said.<snip>

The more U.S. soldiers coming home in transfer tubes, the greater our level of success.

These people all need to go on trial in The Hague for what they have done!

Pilgrims to honor past, debate Iraq's future
Millions head for shrines and politics of Shiite city

by Matthew B. Stannard, San Francisco Chronicle
January 30th, 2004
(snip)
In 1991, Mahdi said, the legend inspired the people of Karbala to join the uprising against Saddam Hussein that followed the Persian Gulf War. Thousands died in vain during the revolt, and the holy shrines were badly damaged.

Today, he said, the story of Husayn is motivating Karbalans in a different way. Mahdi is the local representative of Grand Ayatollah Ali al- Sistani, the highest Shiite cleric in Iraq, who from his office in Najaf has been calling on his followers to demand an active role in the shaping of the country's new government.

The 75-year-old Iranian-born al-Sistani has rejected a U.S. plan to choose the new government through a process of regional caucuses, instead demanding direct election of the new parliament.

The proposal has rattled some Sunnis in the north, who fear they will be shut out in direct elections and say the common estimate that Shiites make up 60 percent of Iraq's population is incorrect.

I wasn't offended by your comment. In fact, I am almost always 100% in agreement with your comments and enjoy them immensely. They eloquently reflect the way I feel about this administration. I was upset at the moderators who sent me a "warning" about a post that I made re: Wolfowitz which wasn't much different than yours and being a relatively new poster, I wasn't sure of how to get my point across to the moderators.

46. Welcome to DU, Ilmart!
Don't be too upset with the mods; they probably give a little extra scrutiny to the newcomers to make sure they aren't disruptors trying to break the 'inciting violence' rules, etc.

Plus they have to deal with TONS of garbage from freeps (& "Rushbots"?) everytime Rush talks about DU on his show.

Mari333 has a son-in-law in Iraq.

51. Thanks for clearing that up.
Guess my feelings were a little hurt at first when I got a message from the mods. Mari333 - I feel for you if you have a close relative in Iraq. I am old enough to remember the VietNam fiasco - my loved ones having to go/trying not to go, so I have been very vocal against this war and against the idiot in the WH. I travelled to Washington from Michigan just to protest with thousands against going to war with Iraq. Of course, it didn't help deter * but I couldn't stand by and do nothing. I guess sometimes I get a little "hot" when reading some of the stupid things these PNAC'ers say.

the embodiment of the antichrist.

Most folks don't realize yet what these Likudniks are really all about. They want the world to devolve into chaos and anarchy so that everyone will kill each other, while they wait it out in their secure bunkers. Then when it's over they'll have the whole planet to themselves and won't have to share their resources with the rest of us anymore.

37. here's a Rummy quote for you
Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defence:

"What is victory? I say victory is persuading the American people and the rest of the world that this is not a quick matter that will be over in a month or a year or even 5 years. It is something we need to do so that we can continue to live in a world with powerful weapons and with people who are willing to use those powerful weapons. And we can do that. That would be a victory in my opinion." Dec. 2001
