Chinese man kills U.S. tourist in Beijing
Source: MSNBC

BEIJING - A Chinese man attacked two American tourists in Beijing on Saturday, killing one of them and injuring another before committing suicide, officials said.

A spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Government said the attack happened in downtown Beijing at noon on Saturday. Officials issued a statement saying the 47-year-old attacker, Tang Yongming, also injured an American woman and her Chinese tourist guide.

The attack took place on the second level of the Drum Tower, a popular tourist attraction in north Beijing. Tang later jumped to his death from the ancient monument used to tell time centuries ago.

1. of course it could have just been random...
but, they foster such distrust of us (beware the internets!) that one has to wonder the reason... hopefully there'll something they can find out before this is brushed aside. Wonder if B*sh will hot tail it out of there? He's at a beach? Oh brother, please, NO pics folks, PLEASE!

25. Like Bush gives a shit...
about an average American citizen. Unless it was a well connected republican, he won't give a shit. Oh sure, he'll say something moronic, you can pretty much count on that (happens every time he opens his pretzel hole). But in the end, this is the man who has sent over 4000 Americans to die for his own agenda in an illegal war, so one more average Joe won't mean shit to him, even if he says it does.

3. Relative of US Olympic coach killed in Beijing
Source: Associated Press

BEIJING - A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said.

The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site.

The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.

The stabbing came only hours after what by many accounts was the most spectacular opening ceremony in Olympic history and it has already dampened some of the enthusiasm.

So much for all the security China claims to have.

If we were displacing people here like China was. I can't be sure that was the cause, but China is all the things George Bush wishes for America, he's not over there for nothing. As far as human rights go China is despicable as you can get. I've judged China before this happened, this is probably just a symptom to their sick treatment of human beings. All hail McDonalds, mf'ers!

6. What does ABC lead with on Saturday's GMA? The Edwards affair.
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 07:33 AM by bulloney
The first six minutes of the cast was an "exclusive" in-depth report culminating months of investigating by Brian Ross. That's 10% of the first hour's total time. That's what led the cast.

Not the Americans attacked and killed at the Olympics. Not the Russian invasion of Georgia and its ramifications on the oil market and the state of the world in general. They led with the story about Edwards' affair. And they said they'll have more on the story later in the hour.

That's when I turned the damned TV off.

8. Sex sells
Prominent politician caught up in a sex scandal. It's gonna lead for at least a few days. Ultimately the media is a business and when it comes to selling ads dragging a prominent politician through the mud gets butts in seats. He is a self made millionaire and a successful, well liked politician. The media knows they will get viewers if they broadcast his fall from grace live in TV. They know they will get both those that are cheering his disgrace and those that love him and are mourning it.

38. F*CK ABC!!!!!!!!!
my goodness, that's horrible. those bastards... GOD forbid they talk about a murderous suiciding Chinese man at the Olympics killing an American - GOD forbid they talk about the mass warfare that just happened in Georgia that killed thousands....

NO NO --- Edwards not keeping it in his pants, THAT'S the most important thing! Brian Ross is gross... wonder what he's doing in private. He probably bitched that he deserved major time for the effort of trying to expose Edwards - a story he was SCOOPED on by the Enquirer!!! HAHAHA loser.

NEVER MIND THAT JOHN EDWARDS IS NOT RUNNING ANY MORE - AND HAS NO ELECTED POSITION - HE MUST STILL BE DESTROYED IN THE MEDIA - THAT'S WHAT THE OWNERS SAY!

30. Since in your original post you did not indicate it was because of the pollution
and health reasons, and since this thread is about the killing of an American by a deranged Chinese citizen, there was no way to discern what your dislike for the city was

You don't want to go to China, don't, especially if it doesn't agree with you

in Iraq, Viet Nam, etc. perhaps the U.S., Russia, France, and most every country in the world, except maybe for some of the scandinavian countries, should not be allowed to host the Olympics

19. it is sad and terrible anytime a tourist or any person is murdered
we do it everyday in iraq - our government murders people regularly - the death penalty is murder too - I am not happy for this incident but my concern was that it would be blown out of proportion to what our own cities and government do - their is a lot of pointing fingers on human rights but we are torturing people and the media and lots of people think that is ok. The guy who was here to fix my air conditioning said if he had a gun and was in iraq it would be warm all the time - that is the kind of craziness that is out there -

They just broke into Olympic coverage to offer sympathy to the rest of the family and to the volleyball coach. Did not catch it all, but the name they gave was Bachman, I think.

How very sad.
