Fury at India phone card ban

India's intelligence say
separatists use cards on
imported mobiles


Consumer groups in India's north-east states have slammed a government move to prohibit use of pre-paid cash cards in mobile phones in the troubled area.

The central government says it is imposing a ban on the pre-paid cards because they are used by separatists.

But consumer protection groups in the region say the security threat has been grossly exaggerated.

There are around 40,000 mobile phone subscribers in the north-eastern states of Assam and Meghalaya alone.
