Veteran Alaskan senator (Ted Stevens) charged with hiding gifts
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 03:17 PM by Elad
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Veteran Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens was charged on Tuesday with concealing more than $250,000 of gifts, including renovation of his house, from an Alaska oil services company, the Justice Department said.

The Alaska politician, who has served 40 years in the senate, was charged in a federal grand jury indictment with seven counts of making false statements on his Senate financial disclosure forms from 2001 to 2006, the department said.

The six-term senator is accused of receiving substantial improvements to property he owns in Alaska, new vehicles in exchange for older ones worth far less, and household goods, the Justice Department said in a statement.

The charges follow a wide-ranging investigation coordinated by the Justice Department's Office of Public Integrity which has lasted several years.

106. That's disgusting, not a bit funny...at least not to me...I suppose racists
...who see it are laughing their asses off. Maybe the artist could add a footnote cartoon illustrating that type of response complete with the KKK outfits, buning cross and Confederate flag

142. Typical Republican (the characaturist) style of degrading campaigns to slime throwing and crotch
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 01:36 PM by JohnWxy
kicks. first of all the New Yorker cover wasn't satire it was personal attack by rumor reverberation - masquerading as satire.

The second step of the gutter level campaign tactic is to attempt to belittle legitimate criticism of the first attack as being "too sensitive" as if to say any criticism or examination of the first attack could not be legitimate.

This is classic Republican style slime throwing politics. They are good at it because anybody with any self respect is put off by it and usually gives up is disgust after initially trying to set the record strait and defend himself against unfounded and therefore insinuated accussations of immoral character or insufficient patriotism (as defined by a 12 yr old mentality).

This sort of punch and counter-punch as far as REpub degenerates are concerned, can go on forever. They NEVER WILL TIRE OF IT - and it serves their purpose well, that of distracting attention from the actual issues that should be considered in an election.

They are masters of it because they have no self respect. Anybody who had an ounce of self respect would never engage in this sort of thing, but they relish it.

recommended.

150. oh come on-- it's CARICATURE for crying out loud....
Where do you see anything racist in that? It's just a caricature trying to make the cartoonist's point about Obama's reaction to The New Yorker. KKK outfits? Confederate flags? Don't you think that's a bit over-the-top? Not all political cartoonists are going to be sympathetic or complementary toward Sen. Obama all of the time, or ever in some cases. Artists are entitled to express their opinions just like everyone else.

174. No I don't agree that my observation is over the top, the artist deliberately
...selected a Grays Anatomy Text Book format style to convey and inflame racial prejudices toward differences in racial heritage as somehow supporting Obama's ultimate reaction to the New Yorker. It is far from obtuse IMHO.

Check it out for yourself: http://www.bartleby.com/107/

In this case the cartoon artist appears to have used as his reference "Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist" or some similar reference source as a starting point to exaggerate the features and structure of Obama's head, skull, muscle and profile.

229. you're suggesting there's something racist about his having...
...a skull and muscles? That's utterly absurd. Of course the artist exaggerated his features-- that's what makes it caricature. I find your objections especially hard to fathom since the artist didn't particularly exaggerate racially distinctive features-- rather, he emphasized personally identifying features, e.g. Sen. Obama's narrow face and sharp chin, his ears, etc. That's not racism, at least not as I define it. It's just political caricature.

182. Actually, the "artist" should have replaced mccain in that cartoon.
The only thing that would not apply is the second image, muscle. Somehow he does not appear athletic. Obama being portrayed as hot-headed is way off the mark. Obama has proved himself to be graceful under fire.

Many rail against Stevens, ANWR

GAMBLE: Opponents say they hope Alaska lawmaker's strategy of using defense bill backfires on him.

By LIZ RUSKIN
Anchorage Daily News

Published: December 17th, 2005 08:43 AM
Last Modified: December 17th, 2007 12:19 PM

WASHINGTON -- Opponents of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge are rallying to keep the controversy off the defense spending bill -- and hoping the strategy of wedding ANWR and military funding backfires on Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

"This is one of the most unpatriotic acts ever attempted by an elected official -- tantamount to treason," said Brian Moore, legislative director for the Alaska Wilderness League. "It's Ted Stevens denying the troops food, funding, ammunition -- everything they need."

Stevens, R-Alaska, announced this week that he is trying to push ANWR through Congress by attaching it to the defense appropriations bill. He is a key negotiator on two of the last bills Congress is likely to pass this year -- defense spending and the five-year budget -- and he is doing all he can to hold them up until he gets ANWR passed on at least one of them.

His tactic of forcing lawmakers to vote for ANWR to get military spending has outraged more than environmentalists. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called Stevens' effort "disgusting" and couldn't say how he'd vote on the combined bill.

"I think it's disgraceful that I have to be put in that position," McCain, a drilling opponent, told the Washington Post.

255. Yes, son of Nick,
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 02:16 AM by Blue_In_AK
and actually Alaska's founding fathers, so to speak, were mostly all Democrats, so much so that Eisenhower was somewhat disinclined toward granting us statehood because it would mean more Democrats in Congress. Ted Stevems was appointed to his Senate position by then Governor Wally Hickel when Democratic senator Ernest Gruening passed away in 1968. Don Young lost the election in 1972 to Democrat Nick Begich, even though Begich had been missing and presumed dead for three weeks by the time of the election. A special election was later held which put Young in his position. And, of course, you can't forget that Mike Gravel was senator from 1974 to 1980. Republicans didn't come to power here until Big Oil took over. Now, with the VECO scandals and the recent Supreme Court ruling in the EXXON VALDEZ case (which reduced the original $5 billion punitive damages award to $500,000), the Republican "brand" has lost much of its appeal.

36. CBS NEWS REPORTING:
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Sen Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, has been indicted on corruption charges, CBS News has learned.

The FBI, working with an Alaska oil contractor, secretly taped telephone calls with Sen. Ted Stevens as part of a public corruption sting it was reported late last year, according to people close to the investigation.

The secret recordings suggest the Justice Department was eyeing Stevens long before June 2007, when the Republican senator first publicly acknowledged he was under scrutiny. At that time, it appeared Stevens was a new focus in a case that had already ensnared several state lawmakers.

The recorded calls between Stevens and businessman Bill Allen were confirmed by two people close to the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way. They declined to say how many calls were recorded or what was said.

Allen, a wealthy businessman and Stevens' political patron, agreed to the taping last year after authorities confronted him with evidence he had bribed Alaska lawmakers. He pleaded guilty to bribery and is a key witness against Alaska legislators. He also has told prosecutors he paid his employees to renovate the senator's house.

In July, FBI agents raided that house in the Anchorage suburb of Girdwood. Stevens has denied any wrongdoing and said he paid every bill he received for the project. Spokesman Aaron Saunders declined to comment Thursday. Stevens has said he won't discuss the investigation for fear it will look like he's trying to influence it.

These FBI investigations have been going on up here since at least 2004. You may know that three Republican state legislators are already in prison, two more are awaiting trial, and various other Republican operatives within the state have cut plea deals. There will be more -- no doubt Ted's son Ben and Rep. Don Young for starters.

This investigation was on going before Michael "I'm not sure waterboarding is torture" Mukasey got the job.

I think that the investigation was already too far along for him to be able to stop it.

So let's give credit where it's due, to the FBI investigators and the federal prosecutors, not some Bush hack like Mukasey!!!

but we've had a very cold year, and very little sunshine. We are on track to have maybe the coldest summer on record -- only seven days above 65. LaNina, they tell us. But it is true that the sun is shining brightly right now, the skies are blue, and we, at least in this house, are thrilled to death.

Banker Dave Cuddy is on the ballot, as well as a newcomer named Vickers, who just moved here in January and probably doesn't stand a chance -- but he's rich and has put a lot of his own money into the campaign apparently. http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/478115.html

But Democrat Mark Begich was polling even or slightly ahead of Stevens anyway, so I think the pubs are done. The deadline for filing for public office was in June.

Yes, we are a caucus state, and ours was held on the first Super Tuesday, February 5. The Democrats caucused and the Republicans had what they called a "presidential preference poll" (in which John McCain came in dead last, by the way). Our legislative and state offices primary is held in August, and will also include some initiatives this year.

And just the fact that folks like Phil Gramm reside there should be enough to get several investigations going....

And as we know, they have politicized the Justice department. So I'm not holding my breath on that one. Besides, they don't have the constitutional power to indict either a sitting president or VP. Only Congress can do that.

Normally, they would cover something like this up. Call me cynical, but I wonder if they have something up their sleeve. Perhaps they want to knock him off in the primary so that they will have at least an outside chance to keep the seat in November.

(So affiliated, in fact, the airline and your state share a name :hi: ) And when we started flying to National Airport in DC a few years ago, dear Teddy became one of our most steady passengers. From what my co-workers told me, the Sen was just as big a curmugeon bastard as you think. He's entitled and demanding, old and crotchety, and just generally mean.

165. Sen. Stevens indicted: 7 false statements counts
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and a figure in Alaska politics since before statehood, was indicted Tuesday on seven counts of failing to disclose thousands of dollars in services he received from a company that helped renovate his home.

Stevens, the first sitting U.S. senator to face federal indictment since 1993, has been dogged by a federal investigation into his home renovation project and his dealings with wealthy oil contractors. The investigation has upended Alaska state politics and cast scrutiny on Stevens — who is running for re-election this year — and on his congressional colleague, Rep. Don Young of Alaska, who is also under investigation.

Prosecutors said Stevens received more than $250,000 in gifts and services from VECO Corp., a powerful oil services contractor, and its executives. From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said, the 84-year-old senator concealed "his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation."

The indictment unsealed Tuesday says the items included: home improvements to his vacation home in Alaska, including a new first floor, garage, wraparound deck, plumbing, electrical wiring; as well as a Viking gas grill, furniture and tools. He also was accused of failing to report swapping an old Ford for a new Land Rover to be driven by one of his children.

209. Good news for the Dems, bad news for our gov
Since its obvious so many of these guys are crooks and these are our leaders? At least most of them are on the other side. This is great though for Dems in general, especially if this drags on and gets lots of attention. Maybe will give Obama a few more polling points this summer as well.

211. 40 years in the Senate?
Makes one wonder just how much hanky panky Senator Tubes has been up to and gotten away with. I sure hope there are some enterprising journalists out there warming up the word processors and Freedom of Information Act requests.

We need a special prosecutor for this type of scum. Not that it is likely any time soon, if ever.
