Iran sentences Israeli 'spy' to death
Source: Times of India

30 Jun 2008, 1653 hrs IST,AFP

TEHRAN: Iran has sentenced a telecom salesman to death on charges of spying for Israel, official media reported on Monday. “Ali Ashtari was convicted of spying for Israel and was sentenced to death by the revolutionary court,” the official IRNA news agency reported.

Ashtari was accused of being involved in a plot hatched by the Israel secret services to intercept the communication of Iranian officials working in the military and its contested nuclear programme. Ashtari still has time to appeal the verdict with a higher court.

“He fell into the trap of the foreign intelligence services. They took advantage of his situation. They asked him to cooperate and he cooperated,” the Mehr news agency quoted an intelligence source as saying.

The verdict comes amid an intensifying war of words between Iran and its regional arch enemy Israel, which has never ruled out military action to halt the former’s nuclear programme. Tehran, however, maintains that its nuclear programme is aimed only at producing electricity.

1. An event like the execution of this Man could be the tipping point.
I wouldn't want to think what gas prices would be if Israel bombs Iran.

4. The purge of 'spies' may be underway...what, with all those fresh graves and all
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3374151&mesg_id=3374203

The guy probably worked two jobs, like most Iranians, and in order to make ends meet, spent free time buying and selling items in the black market.

He does get to appeal in a higher court.......

319,999 vacant graves left to fill

the Iranian government has done massive purges before to get rid of dissidents, this tension could prove a useful distraction to get disappear some unruly characters while people's attention is elsewhere.

5. I couldn't help but notice your concern is over "what gas prices would be."
When, in fact, a war is going to mean even more thousands of dead civilians, just as in Iraq and in Afghanistan.

NPR (Neocon Public Relations) was reporting that of the U.S. troops who murdered Iraqi troops in Haditha, none of them will do jail time.

8. Frankly, that would be the least of the worries
These are human beings who are at great risk. I know some. From both countries concerned.

Let's just hope (and do whatever else we can do, which isn't much) that this is all just a lot of brinkmanship and that war is averted.

7. Things are falling apart

The mullahs only have to follow the western MSM to get spooked into knee jerk responses to what we say over the airwaves.
