Andrew Young: Obama Would be Good for America's Image

ATLANTA (MyFox Atlanta) – Former United Nations ambassador Andrew Young said Sunday that the world is angry with America, and if Senator Barack Obama is elected president, that image can change. At the same time, many Georgia GOP leaders said they think Senator McCain has made bold moves in the right direction. FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor Reports Young was a loyal Clinton supporter when the primary season started, but he was also pulling for Obama. Now, Young plans to campaign for the Illinois senator on the campaign trail.

Sen. Obama is the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, but he wasn't the initial candidate of choice for Young.

The former Atlanta mayor said his original support for Clinton, whom he's known since she was in her 20's, was based on their personal relationship. Like many other Clinton supporters, Young has made the switch and shifted his support to Obama. "I gave Obama more money than I gave Hillary in the beginning because I wanted him to be able to run a campaign," said Young. "I didn't know he was capable of running a campaign that could capture the imagination of the country. He's proved to me he can."

Young said America's image is tarnished around the world and that problem has played out in everything from international relations to gas prices. "Barack Obama's elected and the stock market right now would jump 500 points. People are mad with America around the world and that's hurting American business," Young said.

3. Just a question for anyone who might know
When was the last time (if ever) that a nation elected an ethnic/racial minority of that nation to its chief executive position; in a truly democratic election, that is?

7. Of course I think Senator Obama would be great
But Ambassador Young is not exactly the paradigm of foresight:

...in 1978, Ambassador Andrew Young described Robert Mugabe in an interview with the Times of London:

"Does Mr. Mugabe strike you as a violent man?" the Times reporter asked. "Not at all, he's a very gentle man," Young replied. "In fact, one of the ironies of the whole struggle is that I can't imagine Joshua Nkomo, or Robert Mugabe, ever pulling the trigger on a gun to kill anyone. I doubt that they ever have."

Ambassador Young could barely contain his brimming admiration for the newest "liberator" of Africa's oppressed: "I find that I am fascinated by his intelligence, by his dedication. The only thing that frustrates me about Robert Mugabe is that he is so damned incorruptible."
