Rallies for Ku Klux Klan, Democrats planned here same day
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 08:36 AM by Crisco
As high-profile Democrats flock to Nashville early next month for the Tennessee Democratic Party's pep rally for presidential candidates, the Ku Klux Klan will be in town the same day holding a recruitment rally.

With national and local news media expected to cover the Democrats' celebration, the timing of the events could send images of robed KKK members marching through Nashville to TV viewers nationwide.

John Sloop, associate professor of communications studies at Vanderbilt University, said the KKK rally probably wouldn't hurt the reputation of the Democratic presidential candidates. But, he said, it probably would reinforce stereotypes of white Southerners as racist radicals if it is broadcast nationwide.

This is happening February 8.

First, we had the story of how Nashville schools aren't publishing honor rolls because Johnny might be embarrassed.

Then we have the group that's trying to force the school district to dumb down its mission statement because Johnny's parents can't read.

Now this.

And we were doing so well.

*sigh*

1. Which rally will Sen. Robert Byrd go to?
Maybe he can make it to both.

4. Obviously you are behind in the times with the truth
about Senator Byrd.

7. People can change,...
,...I believe Sen. Byrd did change, long ago. He has become a powerful voice for democracy and equality,...perhaps BECAUSE of his prior affiliations and experience therefrom. I wouldn't throw this man in the trash for his past when his actions demonstrate that he has changed.

10. I do too, but AFAIK he has not publicly renounced his past
The man says a lot of great things, and I admire him, but I don't want a Trent Lott incident on our side of the aisle.

It's also important to remember that even our heroes aren't perfect. Otherwise we are vulnerable to being bamboozled like the Republicans have been bamboozled by Bush.

11. He Renounced His KKK Past YEARS Ago
Byrd only joined the KKK because 60 years ago it was a requirement for political office in WV. But times change, and he quit the Klan years ago.

So stop trying to drag an honorable man through the mud.

13. Please do not compare this man to Trent Lott,...
,...I am perfectly aware that Sen. Byrd is not nor has he ever been "perfect" (I don't believe any human being can possibly fit a description that can take on such an infinite variety of shape and form). But, Sen. Byrd's actions deserve acknowledgement as noble and I judge my "heroes" by their ability to grow and evolve and change. Sen. Byrd is an inspiration to me because he is living proof of any person's capacity, if willing, to grow and evolve and change.

14. I'm not sure that Byrd hasn't - of course your gonna direct
me to a website that sez Byrd has not renounced his past, 'eh?

Robert Byrd's actions are loud and very clear. More so than a flowery speech asking forgiveness for a mistake that never ever hurt anyone.

21. You need to change your name. You do not speak the truth.
Byrd was a short-time member of the KKK - DECADES AGO.

People change. Sometimes even - gasp! - for the better.

Learn the facts before spewing rightwing hate, please.

2. You are simply wrong about the honor rolls story.
Don't go along with the right-wing spin. Tennessee state privacy laws forbid releasing any academic information, good or bad, without permission. That was the only reason the schools stopped posting honor rolls. It is a quirk of Tennessee law. Most other states follow federal student privacy guidelines, which allow the release of honor rolls. Furthermore, school officials are developing permission slips to give parents of the Nashville students the option of having their children's work recognized, so even that won't be an issue soon.

5. One Minor Problem
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 09:12 AM by Crisco
About the privacy thing.

A project is currently underway to database every slice of info of every student in Tennessee into a central computer system. That's where the real privacy laws are needed, to dictate who can access the database.

Director of Schools Dr. Pedro Garcia asked whether rights of students who are not on these lists were violated by the assumption such students did not meet the performance requirements to be honored.

against the right wing and their hatred of freedom for all americans. The Klan are repukes.

9. I think most of them are so called "Christians"
At least most of them claim to be, T.V. told me they were. As James Carville said: "the problem with the new testament is now and then somebody will pick it up and read it"

17. as a republican
I can honestly say that I do not and never did support the KKK.
why do you associate them with republicans?

Was Byrd a republican when he was a member of the KKK? Even if he was I know of no republicans who would support such a hate group.

23. Though you won't be here long, interesting tone.
So, during your brief stay, perhaps we can enlighten you.

First off, your party was taken over long ago by a gang of "conservatives" who believe that the fundamental structure of our government must be destroyed in order to be rebuilt. Don't believe me? Read David Brock's Blinded By The Right. If you are one who actually believes in truth, justice, and liberty, LOOK AT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY'S ACTIONS. They are not conducive to these things. Perhaps they may have been at one time, but there is rot at the heart of both parties - it just so happens that yours is now personified by the traitors in the White House. You would do well to cut ties with these maniacs.

Now, as far as KKK-Republican connections, Google can tell you all you need to know, and you can even select your own sources. While you're at it, run a search on Bob Jones University.

Nice to see a Republican who doesn't start screaming bile instantly. Still, your observations on Byrd are stale and no longer apply.

25. Apparently, You've Never Read Either The Repuke Party Platform or the
democratic party platform. It is clear which party the KKK supports. Repukes are anti-affirmative action, anti-GLBT basic human rights, pro-war, anti-choice, etc. Are these values those of the typical hate filled KKK member? uh.. yeah!

Let the TV audience see the Klan parading in tandem with the Democratic primary. Maybe it'll remind people which party these bastards side with, and who the real enemy is.

After all, I have to listen to such nonsense as Liberals hate America and anti war Democrats support Saddam, et AL.

besides ask the KKK which party they id with.

24. I'm hoping that someone will refer to the...
... "Republican convention" going on in the same town in a speech at the Democratic convention. Of course the uproar that would inevitably follow may or may not be beneficial, but I'd certainly get a kick out of it.
