McCain disavows aide's comment about terrorism
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 06:06 PM by maddezmom

FRESNO, Calif. - John McCain distanced himself Monday from a top adviser who said another terrorist attack on U.S. soil this election year would benefit the Republican presidential candidate. Barack Obama's campaign called the comment a "complete disgrace."

Charlie Black, an adviser already in the spotlight for his past lobbying work, is quoted in the upcoming July 7 edition of Fortune magazine as saying such an attack "certainly would be a big advantage to him." Black said Monday he regretted the comment.

Black is also quoted as saying the "unfortunate event" of the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto in December 2007 "helped us."

Questioned about Black's comments during a news conference, McCain said, "I cannot imagine why he would say it; it's not true. I've worked tirelessly since 9/11 to prevent another attack on the United States of America. My record is very clear."

from the Fortune Article:

~snip~

Not America's dependence on foreign oil? Not climate change? Not the crushing cost of health care? Eventually McCain gets around to mentioning all three of those. But he starts by deftly turning the economy into a national security issue - and why not? On national security McCain wins. We saw how that might play out early in the campaign, when one good scare, one timely reminder of the chaos lurking in the world, probably saved McCain in New Hampshire, a state he had to win to save his candidacy - this according to McCain's chief strategist, Charlie Black. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an "unfortunate event," says Black. "But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us." As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. "Certainly it would be a big advantage to him," says Black.

Between this and Kristol's comments over the weekend, the repubs are really playing the terror/fear card to the max

Kristol: Bush Might Bomb Iran If He ‘Thinks Senator Obama’s Going To Win’»
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 10:21 AM by deminks
On Fox News Sunday this morning, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said that President Bush is more likely to attack Iran if he believes Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is going to be elected.

However, “if the president thought John McCain was going to be the next president, he would think it more appropriate to let the next president make that decision than do it on his way out,” Kristol said, reinforcing the fact that McCain is offering a third Bush term on Iran.

“I do wonder with Senator Obama, if President Bush thinks Senator Obama’s going to win, does he somehow think — does he worry that Obama won’t follow through on that policy,” Kristol added. Host Chris Wallace then asked if Kristol was suggesting that Bush might “launch a military strike” before or after the election:

WALLACE: So, you’re suggesting that he might in fact, if Obama’s going to win the election, either before or after the election, launch a military strike?

KRISTOL: I don’t know. I mean, I think he would worry about it. On the other hand, you can’t — it’s hard to make foreign policy based on guesses of election results. I think Israel is worried though. I mean, what is, what signal goes to Ahmadinejad if Obama wins on a platform of unconditional negotiations and with an obvious reluctance to even talk about using military force.

(end snip)

From day one of Bushco, we have been run by a cult.

4. McCain adviser apologizes for September 11 comment
Source: Reuters

FRESNO, California (Reuters) - A top adviser to Republican presidential candidate John McCain apologized on Monday after he was quoted as saying a September 11-type attack before the November election would benefit McCain.

The campaign of Democrat Barack Obama condemned the remark by McCain political adviser Charlie Black, calling it a "complete disgrace."

"I deeply regret the comments, they were inappropriate," Black said in a statement after McCain said that if Black had made such a comment, "I strenuously disagree" with it.

McCain, asked about the magazine article at a news conference, distanced himself from the comment.
"I cannot imagine why he would say it. It's not true," McCain said, adding he had worked hard since the September 11 attack to prevent another such attack.

9. What did this guy say that's inappropriate?
It's the truth... the majority of Americans would gladly give up more freedoms just for somebody who they think is more likely to seek revenge, etc.

11. It's inapproriate because of the complete failure of republicons to stop 9/11
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 06:39 PM by SpiralHawk
Even after they had some 60 or more explicit warnings beforehand. Sure smells like LIHOP or MIHOP -- and every American who has looked objectively at the evidence knows that. So when republicon homelanders start voicing their longings for another attack on America to give them further political advantage, it stinks to high heaven.

The Pentagon had over an hour to respond after the first plane hit the WTC, yet could not even muster a pop gun to defend themselves or the nation's capital. That's more Big Stink.

13. Yea, but.... it would still help McCain.
The guy is right. I don't see what the outrage toward the man for this statement is about. We should be outraged at all the idiots who WOULD in fact support McCain if another attack happens, not the guy making that observation.

to boost your so-called power...As some republicon homelanders are apparently doing, and as this republicon clown articulated.

12. You're right...
not only is it appropriate but it is consistent with the GOP strategy to win an election. Trying to scare the bejesus out of the American people with terror, terror, terror. How many bin Laden tapes can you release? I don't think the duct tape and plastic sheeting will fly this time, and if something should happen I think they will be perceived to have caused it.
