122. MSNBC- George Carlin to get Mark Twain humor award
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25218169/

Comedian makes people not only laugh, but think, chairman says
Robert Sebree / AP

WASHINGTON - George Carlin will be awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Tuesday that Carlin will be honored for his 50-year career as a Grammy-winning standup comedian, writer and actor. The center will salute Carlin at a tribute performance by former colleagues November 10th, which will be broadcast later on PBS.

Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen Schwarzman says Carlin makes people laugh but also makes them think.

Carlin, 71, has released 22 solo albums and three best-selling books. He starred a variety of TV and movie roles and is famous for his “Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV” routine.

There was never any stopping him. He will be so sorely missed down here.

The seven dirty words you can't say on television.

And "tits"?

Saw Mr. Carlin in an small venue in Vermont - he was excellent.

And for euphemsism, for masturbation, he liked what a (supposedly) audence member suggested - "shaking hands with the unemployed".

Requisat In Pace, George.

My favorite:
A dog exploded on a busy downtown street corner today. Nobody was injured, however 20 people were overcome by fur. Police also estimate that somewhere between 100 and 150 fleas also lost their lives in the blast.

43. What He Believed, How He Thought, Why We Should Love and Respect Mr. Carlin - RIP
http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/qframe.htm

Religion: If this offends you, welcome to the world of sane and realistic critical thought. More harm has been done to the collective human psyche by religion than by all the fucking and cocksucking since the dawn of time. By the way, many religious people (including the ordained) fuck and suck each other's cocks all the time.

*

I don't have any beliefs or allegiances. I don't believe in this country, I don't believe in religion, or a god, and I don't believe in all these man-made institutional ideas.

*

In the Bullshit Department, a businessman can't hold a candle to a clergyman. 'Cause I gotta tell you the truth, folks. When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims: religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told.
Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!
But He loves you.
He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!
-- George Carlin Politically Incorrect, May 29, 1997

*

I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.

*

Goodbye Mr. George Carlin.
RIP
You lived your one life to fullest. Changed the way people viewed the world. And made them laugh in the process.
Respect.

53. Ahhhhhh batshit!!!
Damn!!! We really need his voice in this election cycle. Last comment I heard attributed to him was that he watched The Daily Show on a regular basis and that he thought Lewis Black was the one comic out there today who was really following in his footsteps.

At least he is finally back together with his beloved wife Brenda. He was noticably sadder and angrier since she passed away a few years ago.

54. I saw him work a college in the early seventies...
It was not long after he'd transformed from well-groomed Tonight Show comic to bearded hippie observationalist.

I was eleven years old, and he was the most incredibly funny person I'd ever seen. In addition to the laughs, he was the ultimate cynic who trusted nobody's motives. The man changed the way I looked at the world and made me determined to challenge everything and everyone.

I am so sad to lose him. He wasn't always "right" as I see things, but he always forced me out of my comfy place and made me think.

Goodbye George, and safe travels. May there be more like you, and soon.

if it's true that what goes around, comes around, and if it actually pays attention to the newtonian laws of motion, dane cook's karmic retribution will be something to behold... from a very safe distince.... like say... mars or thereabouts.

having said that, damn, the old guy's gone... i just finished his book brain droppings... excellent work.

best carlin skits/standups ever:
asshole, jackoff, scumbag
the ice box man
a place for my stuff
and the all time greatest carlin standup: "femenist blowjob"

"hey there! which one of you cute cupcakes wants to come home with me and cook me dinner and give me a blowjob?"

i spewed my drink when i heard that... first time ever... and not the last

thanks for the laughs mr. c.

Some of the greatest cynics and atheists have come from the catholic church. Kind of makes you wonder about the ones that go in... and stay...

God Bless George, if there is a heaven, I really hope you get there.

George, George, and the rest... I hope at least God is having some good laughs :) He's got the best comedians.

Just got an intense Catholic upbringing.

People who get that kind of upbringing often react to it in a decisive manner. Atheism is certainly decisive.

92. My prayers are to Joe Pesci today
You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci. Two reasons; first of all, I think he's a good actor. Okay. To me, that counts. Second; he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around. Doesn't fuck around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with. For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog. Joe Pesci straightened that cock-sucker out with one visit.
I noticed that of all the prayers I used to offer to God, and all the prayers that I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answered at about the same 50 percent rate. Half the time I get what I want. Half the time I don't. Same as God 50-50. Same as the four leaf clover, the horse shoe, the rabbit's foot, and the wishing well. Same as the mojo man. Same as the voodoo lady who tells your fortune by squeezing the goat's testicles. It's all the same; 50-50. So just pick your superstitions, sit back, make a wish and enjoy yourself.

George Carlin was the best.

132. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
When I was 13 my aunt asked me to be the godmother of her youngest daughter. I had to meet the priest to get all of the details arranged. My aunt, uncle and mother kept giggling to themselves. When we left, they all exclaimed "He looked so much like George Carlin, I expected him to just yell 'FUCK'!"

I didn't know who George Carlin was at the time. I found out about a year later. I loved him.

If you've never seen the movie "Dogma" it's worth the rental just to see George play a humorous Cardinal. I wish he'd done a ton more acting than he did.

The Church that they filmed in front of was where my sister went to High School, right near where I grew up. Kevin Smith has a penchant for filming in random spots in NJ. Carlin is hilarious as the priest.

He was so un-PC, and I loved him for it. I'll never forget the first line in one of his HBO specials:

"You ever notice that most anti-abortion activists are people you'd never want to fuck anyway?"

Or his description of rice krispies:

"Little beige blisters of air, floating in the milk"

Or his characterization of yogurt:

"'yogurt' ... sounds like it's coming back up. Sorry, I make a point not to eat any food with a 'y' and a 'g' in it"

I'll miss him.

He was a fighter to the very end and he will be sorely, sorely missed.

"This conversation is bound to turn up. Two guys in a street meet each other and one of them says, 'hey, did you hear? Phil Davis died'. 'Phil Davis? I just saw him yesterday.' 'Yeah, didn't help. He died anyway. Apparently, the simple act of you seeing him did not slow down his cancer. In fact, it may have made it more aggressive. You know, you could be the cause for Phil's Death, how, do you live with yourself?'"

-George Carlin, It's Bad For Ya, 2008.

Cheers!

209. Ah shit, I loved George Carlin! Some of his better lines:
I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong.

Why do croutons come in airtight packages? It's just stale bread to begin with.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?

Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?

I recently went to a new doctor and noticed he was located in something called the Professional Building. I felt better right away.

Why is the man (or woman) who invests all your money called a broker?

I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.

Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll go to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money!

260. trouble
I figure that regardless of George's personal beliefs regarding religion if the bible thumpers and jeebus jumpers are correct someone, god or the devil either one has got their hands full right now.I also figure this passes the torch to people like Stewart, Colbert and their generation to be the guys with the large needle deflating the ego-driven powerful. Carlin was as good at it as anyone since Lenny Bruce and for sure we need someone or more than one someone like that now.The necrofile of good guys checking out just keeps getting longer, but this hurts as bad, or worse, than most.Carlin's passing affects me as much, or more than anyone's since Vonnegut left on his next great adventure.

212. Good bye George -- from a lifelong admirer
More than a comic, the world just lost one of it's greatest philosophers.

I've seen him live more than a dozen times and I have all his vinyl albums.

"A man has barricaded himself in his apartment. However he is alone and unarmed so no one cares."

"Christers want to have live babies so they can turn them into dead soldiers."

Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 10:44 AM by astonamous
Someone just sent that to me in an email.

I saw George Carlin perform live in....

are you ready for this? Salt Lake City, Utah.

He wasn't playing in some back alley or smoked filled bar, he wasn't playing at the university...Not even the Delta (piece of shit) Center.

George actually sold out several shows every time he came through Utah and he performed at Symphony Hall...you know...where the symphony performs and operas are staged with gold leaf balconies and plush carpet and chairs. Where, if you weren't seated in time, you had to wait for intermission, because they weren't going to open the doors while he was on stage.

If there is a God, George is talking his way into heaven and Richard Pryor will be on the other side of those gates telling God, "Hey God, let him in...he was just tellin' a joke."

Not long before I read this, I was playing a YouTube clip of Marty Robbins singing Strawberry Roan, "a regular outlaw", as the song describes him, before launching into a description of his mean, ornery, misshapen appearance.

For younger people unfamiliar with the song, he starts off with the words, "Out in the horse corral standing alone, stands an old caballo, a strawberry roan...", and at that point the hairs on the back of my neck almost stand up. People like George, Joe Bageant and Hunter S remind me of that old beast. The old strawberry roan also puts me in mind of the donkey of G K Chesterton's poem of the same name. I suppose they're also both epitomes of suffering mankind, the good guys.

Still, I'm a bit disappointed with this thread. Sure, 4-letter words were part of George's repertoire. But with that kind of passionate anger at the despicable evil of the corporatism inflicted on the West by our dear leaders, it would have been difficult for him to have expressed himself otherwise - given the mutiple stresses of a Western society, in which everyone is seen as a mark by Big Business, to be cheated and tricked at every twist and turn.

But, heck, they were the least part of his gifts. A toddler could use them, and most of us wouldn't find it funny. On the other hand, his analyses of the the way we're all being ground into the dust in war and peace (half a million orphans in Iraq, as well) were incomparable. Hunter S Thompson was a master of white-hot invective, but George somehow managed to make you actually belly-laugh about the villainy, though without in any way trivialising it.

Incidentally, that's a nice touch, that George died in St John's hospital. I know he was an atheist, at least formally, but it was John the Apostle who stood beneath the cross with Mary on Calvary, loyal to the last. I think he recognised a kindred spirit.

272. I remember him as far back
as his Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
He had this routine back in the 70's (I think) about his "stuff."
Like you have this stuff, have to move and take your stuff or get rid of some of the stuff. Then in your new place you start to collect more stuff.
I'm a stuff-balance person, always trying to find stuff equilibrium betweem older and newer stuff. Too much stuff and I'm crowded, not enough stuff I feel deprived.
Maybe he was telling me on Sunday to get rid of that useless stuff I had in the cabinets. Three bags to the dumpster. I also worked clearing out some useless stuff in my head.
I love you George.
Whether he's in some sort of heaven or not (uh...not),

286. George Carlin reading Thomas the Tank Engine stories
It was not just his comedy or his books that I liked about George Carlin. It was his readings of Thomas the Tank Engine stories. I loved them. He was a witty storyteller. When kid wanted repeat of Thomas the Tank Engine stories, I'd get out the George Carlin version. I often wonder if he ever wanted one of those trains to use one of the seven words!

I thought it was so cool he won the Mark Twain award. He was an American classic. The world is a little emptier without him.
