Obama team weighs Nunn, Edwards as running mates

Former Sens. John Edwards and Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, a congresswoman said Thursday, one day after she met with the team Obama has reviewing possible candidates.

Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, said members of her caucus asked her to forward the names of Edwards and Nunn when she met Wednesday with Obama's vice presidential search team. The team, Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, indicated the two were on the list.

When Kilpatrick said Gore was her personal choice, "they had a smile on their face. They have a list of candidates. I think I may have been the first to do that. They didn't say one way or the other."

Winning with Gore on the ticket would sure be some sweet revenge but I just don't think Gore is up for it. Everything else he is doing is so successful for him he probably just wants to keep down that other path.

I would be pumped with him on the ticket but I don't think it is happening.

28. He needs a "Dennis Kucinich" liberal
Much in the same way Dick Cheney provided some extra insurance against the democrats impeaching bush, Obama needs a running mate that is so distasteful to the right they would fear having him as president. Kucinich would be the ideal candidate as he would be a true liberal and the right wing would be too scared to risk having him in the White House. They would welcome the Clintons quicker because they know the Clinton will work out deals with them but Kucinich would be like adding water to oil, it just would not mix well. Obama doesn't need any particular running mate to win as he will win the fight alone but he will need some type of insurance once he is in. On the other hand if Obama picks someone they actually like better, they will be encouraged to get Obama out as soon as possible any way they can.

2. Obama/Gore would be the opposite of my original
dream ticket, but I'd definitely be thrilled with it. I seriously don't think Gore is interested, though.

4. Gore may not be seeking the VP, but he may quite well accept the nomination if given
Right now, Gore is my favorite pick. I agree he may not take it. But it would be great!

15. No way.
Gore; is not, and will not accept the VP slot. He has already been there and done that. Sorry to all the Al Gore lovers, but a man who got the majority of votes for the presidency, will not come back and take a vice presidency job.

23. Totally agree.
I adore the man and desperately wanted him to run, but there is no way he would take a repeat of VP. Why would he want to?

I would love for Edwards to take it. If Edwards isn't the VP nom, then I would like to see him as AG. Otherwise, Richardson, Biden or Feingold would be good VP choices to me.

10. I agree with all three of those
I think the least likely of the three is Gore as VP, though.

8. I will lose ALL respect for Obama if Nunn is his running mate.
And he will lose a LOT of votes. It would be an incredibly stupid and traitorous thing to do.

14. Edwards has had his time
He's run for President twice, and was on the ticket as VP. He's a fabulous Democrat, but this country is full of talented people. Let someone else have a shot.

17. Two Horrible Choices

Nunn is a fearmongering faux Democrat who won't deliver Georgia or help anywhere else, and although I really like JE as a person . . . I don't think another guy on the ticket who served one term or less in the Senate is the answer. Attorney General is the perfect spot for Edwards.

Can't they find a Floridian? Or be brave and go with Sebelius? Tim Kaine?

19. I may be biased
but all signs point to Edwards. Dream team! Whatever negatives the vp candidate choice are, Obama is a shoo-in as the polls indicate so far and Obama can choose whomever he feels most comfortable with, so that choice must be Edwards. They agreed on everything, plus Edwards would make Obama more "A" proof. A huge consideration.

20. If Obama chooses as VP Nunn or some other corporate toady, the Bushies will likely murder him
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 10:12 PM by tom_paine
(of course, it will be a "lone gunman" who "mysteriously penetrated security"...THAT will be the OFFICIAL story)

Obama's best chance to avoid Bushie bullets or a Bushie-created plane crash is to choose as VP someone even more scary to the Bushie Tyrants than he himself is.

Edwards is the closest thing to fit that bill; Nunn or Clinton is a death sentence, IMHO. IF Obama is even permitted to be elected, something I have serious doubts about, also.

I pray I am wrong about this, that Obama is and will continue to be safe.

But it is my observation that when the Bushies need someone dead, from Pat Tillman to Cliff Baxter, they somehow seem to get dead.

I also wonder if the Bushies will hesitate to use murder against a sitting President, something they haven't done in 45 years. Not counting Reagan's attempted assassination, which coincidentally would have made Poppy Bush pResident with an option for an 11 year term! Gosh, I wonder who had the most to gain by Reagan's death?

Obama needs to pick someone who will make the Bushies think twice before Kennedy/Kennedy/King-ing him or even Wellstoning him.

27. Actually, if Reagan had not survived
and bu$h Sr. became president in March 1981, I believe that bu$h Sr. would have only been allowed to be elected for one term on his own, since he would have served more than 2 years of Reagan's term.

Either way, the same "cui bono" applies.

Thanks for setting me straight, I am off to Google a firm answer.

Nunn? No way. No way in hell. Obama does not have my trust enough to thow in the likes of Sam Nunn.
The right will not vote Obama. He needs to bring in the Democrats who are tepid on him. John, Al, Hillary even. Feingold. But Nunn?
