EU-wide alert as Slovenian nuclear plant springs leak
Source: Deutsche Presse-Agentur

Jun 4, 2008, 23:21 GMT

Brussels - A coolant leak at a Slovenian nuclear power plant Wednesday triggered a European Union-wide alert, but EU officials said there appeared to be no danger to the public.

Operators of the US-built plant in Krsko, in south-west Slovenia, shut down the reactor within two hours after coolant began to spill from its primary cooling system at 5:38 pm (1538 GMT), the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said in a statement.

When Krsko issued the alert, the Commission instantly passed it on to all 27 EU member states, warning them of the situation and requiring them to report any anti-radiation measures they would put in place.

'The Slovenian authorities have confirmed that there has been no discharge to the environment. The situation can be considered fully under control,' the statement said.

1. Yeah! Sure!
Have you ever noticed that as soon as the nuclear crowd starts crowing about how good their poison is for the environment, there is a leak somewhere in the world.

I will never forget Chernobyl. Never.

6. "authorities initially misreported Wedneday's mishap as a safety drill"
"However, the Slovenian government's head of nuclear safety, Andrej Stritar, told national television that Slovenian authorities initially misreported Wedneday's mishap as a safety drill."

Gee, that makes me feel safe.
Are they incompetent, or were they trying to cover something up?

7. Have you ever noticed that whenever something like this is reported...
...all the idiots crawl out of the woodwork.

Hospital radiology departments each release as much radiation as a nuclear reactor.

Coal fired power plants release more radiation to the environment than nuke plants.

Your granite benchtops are more radioactive than most materials that are deemed nuclear waste.

So is the concrete slab on which your house is built.

Old sites are not remediated, at least in part, because the requirements forced on the industry by idiots such as yourself are so stringent, that they actually require that radiation at the site be brought BELOW natural background levels, before it can be released for other uses.

8. maybe as much as a properly maintained modern nuke plant...
but there aren't a whole lot of those operating in the US at the moment.

9. Seems to be a bit of GD-P leakage into here, or is that
"idiots such as" just part of the normal background radiation?

Your points were well made prior to that.

10. The poison is in the dose. Look at the pictures from Chernobyl
and see if you still think you are right.

There are parts of the world in which people regularly and naturally consume below a dangerous dose of arsenic. The potential dose from an out of order nuclear reactor or a nuclear waste dump in which large quantities of nuclear waste are concentrated could kill a lot of people -- before their natural time.

2. No danger here -- that is, if you ignore the old Scottish proverb. . .
"Many a little makes a mickle."

(Many small amounts accumulate to make a large amount.)

4. The safety systems worked?
Good!

That's what they're there for.

So, why is this even news?

One of the centerpeices of McCain's energy policy is to push expanded use of nuclear power, with lots of Federal tax benefits.
