Executions scheduled to take place in US states
Source: AP

By The Associated Press – 1 hour ago

Georgia is poised to become the first state in the nation to execute an inmate since the U.S. Supreme Court decided in September to review Kentucky inmates' claims that lethal injection is unconstitutional. The court ruled last month that Kentucky's method of executing inmates, also used by about three dozen other states, is constitutional.

The last execution in the U.S. was Michael Richard of Texas on Sept. 25, 2007.

These are some of the executions that have been scheduled since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling last month:

GEORGIA: William Earl Lynd, 53, scheduled to die at 7 p.m. Tuesday. He was convicted of kidnapping and killing his live-in girlfriend, 26-year-old Ginger Moore, and shooting her three times in the face and head nearly 20 years ago.

"James Lee Woodard walked out of a Texas prison last week after 27 years behind bars. The state now agrees that Woodard was wrongfully convicted in 1981 of killing a girl he had been dating.

Woodard is the 17th man from Dallas to be exonerated by DNA evidence. Nearly all are black. And the district attorney's office is predicting that Woodard won't be the last."

STILL want the death penalty?

4. Actually, I wasn't meaning to imply I wanted it ... I don't.
Of course, after the recent SCOTUS decision, we all knew this was going to happen.

Anyone who supports the DP needs to see the documentary "The Thin Blue Line" -- it was this doc that tipped me off the fence into the "no, never" camp. The DP is too subject to decisions made by corrupt/incompetent officials at the local level, so that a man's life hangs entirely on the hope of a reversal by a higher court. All too often, horrendous miscarriages of justice never get adequate attention through the appeals process.
