AFPBAGHDAD (AFP)--Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki Wednesday accused Shiite militiamen in Baghdad's Sadr City of using civilians as "human shields" in heavy fighting with security forces.
The militiamen, mostly from the Mahdi Army militia of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, were employing tactics used by ousted dictator Saddam Hussein, he said.
"Criminals and lawless gangs are using human shields in Sadr City ... They are following the steps of the Baathist regime," Maliki said at a press conference.
"They are trying to gain sympathy but they are using the lies and the values of the former regime."
The U.S. military alleges that gunmen have been firing at troops from rooftops, alleyways and houses and says often civilians are killed when security forces return fire.
