Annan Says 'Laws of Jungle' Threaten World Order
Fri January 23, 2004 05:54 AM ET

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Friday the world faced a combination of security threats and economic dangers that put the entire international order in jeopardy.

Annan said terrorism and the global war against it threatened to undermine human rights and split the world along cultural, religious and ethnic lines.

"In just a few short years, the prevailing atmosphere has shifted from belief in the near-inevitability of globalization to deep uncertainty about the very survival of our tenuous global order," Annan said.

On the economic front, unfair trade -- especially farming subsidies -- was not only destroying the environment but choking off revenues from the countries that most needed them.

2. sorry but Kaplan is garbage
his writings are fuel for a right-wing foreign policy that sees the rest of the world as barbaric, uncivilized, and ungrateful. His book on the Balkans was absolutely horrific and really really bad. His other books are also awful. Of course, they are very well written, which draws you in. But when reading Kaplan treat it like fiction.

In short, Kaplan is promoting a Bush-like view of the world and of US foreign policy, regardless of what he claims. It's better to skip the Kaplan...

4. Annan has a beautiful mind, but his call to corporations is wishful
thinking that will fall on deaf ears. It seems the only driving force for the majority of companies is profit at any and anyone elses expense. I hate being so negative on the subject, but that is what I am seeing.

5. As I've said before
The fate not only of the U.S. but of the entire world rests on the outcome of this next election. I really don't think that it is hyperbole.

Would it have any impact if world leaders began speaking out against Bush and urging regime change here?
