Cheney: Iran seeks weapons-grade uranium enrichment

Cheney: Iran seeks weapons-grade uranium enrichment Tue Mar 25, 10:02 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday said Iran was developing a uranium enrichment program for military purposes.

"Obviously, they're ... heavily involved in trying to develop nuclear weapons enrichment, the enrichment of uranium to weapons grade levels," Cheney said in an interview with ABC television transcribed by the White House.

Cheney, however, did not mention on what he based his accusation.

The United States and its European allies have led efforts to pressure Iran into freezing its disputed uranium enrichment work, a process that can be used both to make nuclear fuel and the core of an atomic bomb.

Tehran insists its program is peaceful.

29. Think that's bad? I kept trying to wipe off the little flea poo at the upper left!
Then it would disappear and I'd think I got it. Then the little sucker would run up there and poop AGAIN.

I finally figured it out. As Amy says, fool me seven times, shame on you; fool me eight or more times... :dunce:

72. No need for either.
IR2 centrifuges are apparently home-grown and the Iranians can produce them themselves (although the IAEA apparently only found out about them when they were being put into use, after estimates of the possibility of weapons-grade U production being years in the future). I'm pretty sure they don't use Al tubes. There are concerns that they could cascade them, which apparently isn't a major challenge given the other hurdles the Iranians have claimed--and apparently succeeded in--overcoming.

Iran has U deposits of its own--that's part of the justification for pushing nuclear power, it would permit an Iranian version of juche, something that's a very common refrain among some jingoists--so there's no need to "seek" to obtain uranium in Africa, whether in Nigeria or other places.

The debate boils down to good will and trust.

Many point to the recent NIE as definitive--the weapons programs were suspended in 2003 (with rather less confidence in the judgment they haven't been restarted). However, accepting that evaluation entails accepting that they had weapons programs, something that many citing the recent NIE really want to deny.

attacked by some man or another. She is with her husband when she sees the guy who attacked her and goes totally batty. She gets her husband to kill the guy in order to give his wife some peace and security.

Then, just after he kills the guy, his wife sees another man with no resemblance to the first and states that HE is the man who attacked her.

The husband realizes that his wife is totally bonkers and that he has just killed an innocent man...

14. We all know the gist of what he says before reading the article.
Oh, Cheney spoke. Let me guess, all Americans should be fearful because (insert enemy group or nation here) is preparing to attack the U.S., and it will be devastating. Take my word for it.
The most recent NIE contradicted everything he said in this article. He's trying to discredit any intel that doesn't support his plans. And he's doing it, yet again, without providing a scintilla of proof.

24. If they had even a smidge of proof the UN would be in
special session with them waving it all around. Iran isn't trying to enrich to weapons grade. They have no need for it at this time anyway. If they wanted to they would just pull out of the NPT and do it. They haven't gained anything by abiding by the NPT anyway, they just keep getting more sanctions.

Saudi Shura council to discuss plan for sudden radioactive hazards
Riyadh (dpa) - The Saudi Shura council will secretly discuss national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts' warnings of possible attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactors, media reports said Saturday.
The Saudi-based King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology has prepared a proposal that encapsulates the probabilities of leaking nuclear and radiation hazards in case of any unexpected nuclear attacks in Iran, the Okaz Saudi newspaper said. The Saudi Shura or consultative council plans to debate the proposal on Sunday.

The power plants in the south-western Iranian port of Bushehr were built with German assistance in 1974 and resumed with Russian aid in 1992, after it had been stopped by the Islamic revolution. dpa str es pb
