Feds to NY: Hold off on Spitzer probe
Source: New York Post

Federal prosecutors are asking New York authorities to hold off investigating the call-girl scandal that led to Gov. Eliot Spitzer's resignation while a federal probe continues.

A spokesman for the state Inspector General's office says they've been in contact with the U.S. attorney's office, which asked them not to do anything because federal investigators are looking into all aspects of the case.

One question is what was known by the trooper detail that was responsible for Spitzer's security round the clock. State Police have declined to comment. Federal prosecutors have charged four people with operating a prostitution ring that received money from Spitzer's bank account....

The State Police internal probe is aimed at finding out how Spitzer, who registered for two separate rooms just for himself, could have cavorted with a hooker without the knowledge of his security detail.

The U.S. Attorney's office? Anyone at that particular office involved in Gonzo-gate?? Sounds like someone (the Feds) is worried that someone else (NY State) might find out something embarrassing -- and not to Spitzer... :tinfoilhat:

I don't even think you need to wear the tinfoil on that one. I'm sure there's something they don't want coming out.

11. why should it be illegal to sell something that is perfectly legal
to give away?

that line always made me chuckle...

i happen to agree with you... and i will probably catch hell for this, but decriminalising and regulating prostitution would do much to bring it out of the shadows and would ultimately lead to better conditions for the women who choose to earn money this way.

it starts with a basic understanding that its never going to go away.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Cavendish_Grosvenor%2C_6th_Duke_of_Westminster#Controversy

On 11 February 2007, the Duke was exposed by the News of the World for hiring four prostitutes in six weeks to visit him at his mews house in the West End of London. During one of the encounters he allegedly bragged that he knew the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden.

The Duke was also alleged to have been a client of the United States-based Emperors Club VIP, a high class prostitution ring which led to the resignation of New York governor Eliot Spitzer. On 12 March 2008, the Daily Mail reported that the Duke was a patron of the escort agency at the heart of Eliot Spitzer prostitution scandal. His lawyers denied the allegations, claiming he was not in London on the dates in the report.

5. sad fact is the money laundering and bank fraud aspects of this
warrant looking at... not to mention the fact that when he still wore a cape, he aggressively targeted men who do just what he did. that bit of hypocracy in itself warrants consideration,. although ultimately i don't think he s/b prosecuted if all it amounts to is solicitation. the other stuff is, however, a different matter entirely.

9. I would be surprised
if he ever targeted and prosecuted anyone for hiring a prostitute? Is that what you're suggesting? Is that the "hypocracy" (sic) that you speak of?

He went after criminals who stole, cheated and lied and who ripped off the public. That's my understanding of his pattern of investigations a prosecutions.

The real hypocrisy is the fact that those who targeted Spitzer likely have hired prostitutes themselves. This kind of selective prosecution by the right that occurs all the time. That's a well established pattern given that Rove and Company yanked out the federal prosecutors who were going after Republicans. This Spitzer prosecution may be a continuation of that -- I wouldn't put it past BushCo.

You could never accuse Spitzer of prosecuting anyone based on revenge and a need to protect his criminal cronies. That's for Rove, Bush, Guiliani, et al

10. no check it out...
he passed a law shortly after being elected that specifically toughened penalties on johns, and prior to that as AG he got major ink for agressively prosecuting a prostitution ring. he was a damn good attorney general... sucked as a governor though.
